FRAGMENT KSIĄŻKI

Wstęp

Chcesz skutecznie i szybko wzbogacić swoją znajomość słownictwa angielskiego? Przygotowujesz się do egzaminu? Chcesz swobodnie podyskutować z przyjaciółmi poznanymi za granicą albo poczytać brytyjską literaturę w oryginale? „Repetytorium Leksykalne.

W językach o piśmie alfabetycznym takim kryterium będzie porządek abecadłowy a np. w języku chińskim (pismo ideograficzne) będzie to kształt znaku (ideogramu).

1.1. The Universe - Wszechświat

Przeczytaj tekst o teorii Wielkiego Wybuchu. W razie wątpliwości, zajrzyj do zamieszczonych poniżej objaśniej trudniejszych słów związanych z tematem. Podobnie postępuj we wszystkich rozdziałach podręcznika.

The Big Bang theory

A: Good afternoon, dear listeners. Today our guest is Scott Jackson, a professor of astronomy at Johns Hopkins University. Professor Jackson, we appreciate that you took the time to visit us today.

B: I am very happy to be here. Thank you.

A: Professor, could you explain, in layman's terms, what is the Big Bang theory?

B: The Big Bang theory is the theory which says that the universe started from a gigantic cosmic explosion about 10 to 20 billion years ago and ever since it's been expanding. Prior to the explosion there was nothing. Space, time, matter and energy came into existence during the first moment of time.

A: What does it mean that the universe is expanding?

B: It means that distant galaxies are travelling away from us. Their velocity is proportional to their distance, which means that those galaxies twice as far from the Milky Way move twice as fast.

A: Is the Solar System expanding as well?

B: No, it is not. The force of gravity keeps us "anchored". Gravity overcomes the Universe's expansion.

A: Why did the Big Bang happen?

B: Oh, it will always be a difficult question, no matter how hard the scientists work at it. But it doesn't mean that they should stop trying.

The era of space exploration began in 1957 with the lift-off of the USSR's Sputnik 1, which became the first _____________________ (1) in space. The space exploration was driven by the _____________________ (2) between Russia and the USA. For roughly two decades these two world powers competed for scientific superiority and military strength through _____________________ (3) and _____________________ (4) spaceflights, space _____________________ (5) and _____________________ (6). The response to Sputnik came four months later with the ________ (7) of the USA's own Earth orbiter, Explorer 1. The space race continued with various space programs including the Apollo moon landing in 1961. While some believe that the _____________________ (8) was the end, or apex, of the Cold War, others think that the end came with the Apollo-Soyuz mission of 1975, the first spaceflight managed jointly by Russia and the USA.

1.2. Planet Earth Planeta Ziemia

A concept formulated by Anglo-Saxon biologists that treats the Earth as an organic whole, whose surface is shaped by living matter, enjoys a great popularity in contemporary natural history and among environmentalists. This concept is called the Gaia hypothesis after the Greek earth goddess. The hypothesis proposes that all living things have a regulatory effect on the geology of each planet on which they appear. The Gaia hypothesis is supported by a number of facts. It is, for instance, believed that extensive masses of organic sedimentary rocks, which have been deposited for millions of years on the ocean floors, affect the movement of continental plates and continental collision, which in turn results in such processes as catastrophic earthquakes, volcanic activity, creation of mountain ranges or formation of new continents, islands and peninsulas. The Great Barrier Reef which stretches for 2,600 kilometres along Australia's northeastern coast affects not only Australia and Oceania but also the southern hemisphere. The reef is composed of millions of tiny organisms, in particular of coral polyps that form its structure. Preserving the health of Mother Earth is one of the greatest responsibilities of man. The lack of respect that man has had for Gaia is shown through the damage done by industry, agriculture and fishery and may prove catastrophic and irreversible also for humanity itself.

1. nazwami państw, jeśli w ich skład wchodzi rzeczownik pospolity (np. republic, state,

kingdom) oraz jeśli występują w liczbie mnogiej: the People's Republic of China, the United Kingdom, the United States of America, the Philippines, the Bahamas, the Netherlands (nazwa oficjalna to The Kingdom of the Netherlands), the Dominican Republic, the Czech Republic, the West Indies, the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, the Soviet Union, the Russian Federation, the Kingdom of Thailand. 1.3. Climate and weather Klimat i pogoda

Climate is defined as the weather averaged over a longer period of time in a place. For example, Poland has a continental climate. It means that summers are cool (but not cold) and rainy or hot and dry, and winters are quite cold.

Weather is the condition of the atmosphere over a short period of time, such as hours or days. It means that one day the weather is too hot, and the next it is too cold.

The climate system is influenced by multiple interactions between the atmosphere, oceans, ice and the biosphere.

The atmosphere is a mixture of gases that surround the earth. It is made up primarily of nitrogen and hydrogen and it protects the earth from the sun's radiation.

Oceans cover roughly 70% of the earth's surface. They affect the earth's climate by absorbing solar radiation, stored as heat. As they move, ocean currents distribute solar radiation around the globe.

Ice covers about 3% of the earth's surface. When it melts, the ice absorbs heat energy and keeps the surface cooler.

The biosphere is the part of the earth where all living organisms – micro-organisms, animals, plants – exist. Plants convert carbon dioxide (CO2) to oxygen during the process of photosynthesis. Reduction of CO2 contributes to the stabilisation of the climate system.

1.4. Animals -Zwierzęta

A: Why do we talk about animal rights?

B: The answer is simple: animal rights are meant to ensure that animals do not suffer from unnecessary pain. Everyone should see animals as sentient beings and contribute to the improvement of their welfare. Our behaviour should be based on the principle that each and every animal has the right to live and be free.

A: How can we improve animal welfare?

B: Animals shouldn't be used in painful experiments, kept in cramped conditions, or tortured for vivisection. They shouldn't have their furs worn as outer garments, shouldn't be hunted for a trophy or used as entertainment.

A: Other animals hunt for their prey, so what's wrong with humans hunting for animals?

B: Animals hunt to feed themselves and their brood, never for fun. When they have enough, they stop and when they are hungry they hunt again. Most people hunt for sport or just to put more food into their freezers. Eating animals is not necessary for our health. We can easily meet all nutritional needs from a wellplanned vegetarian diet.

A: What's wrong with animal testing? It is carried out to benefit humanity.

B: There are other non-animal research methods that are humane, more accurate and less expensive than animal experiments. There is widespread agreement between the scientists that non-animal testing is the future direction of medical research.

Zoos would be ideal places to care for animals if they could afford to care for them properly. If they provided more humane conditions for animals, instead of wasting money on the visitor centers, more species would be saved.

1.5. Plants - Rośliny

Nowhere else, be it a jungle, savannah or tundra, can we see such a wide variety of plants displayed as in botanical gardens. Botanical gardens house many native and exotic species of plants from around the world. The plants are grouped into several thematic areas according to their botanical family, the country of origin or economic use. The thematic areas usually include Rose Garden, Water Garden, Japanese Garden, Palm Garden, and Subtropical and Jungle Garden. The leading role of botanical gardens is scientific research, conservation of rare and threatened species, and education to increase the knowledge of plant diversity. To reduce the possibility of endangered species becoming extinct, botanical gardens are propagating them to plant back into the wild.

The first botanical gardens were set up in ancient times in order to conduct broad studies of plants, especially herbs. Most of the medieval botanical gardens were largely herb gardens that contained plants used for medicinal purposes (e.g. sage, camomile and rosemary) and for flavouring food (e.g. thyme, parsley, dill, fennel and marjoram). One of the oldest botanical gardens was the one established by the Greeks in Alexandria, which gathered plants from the whole Mediterranean region. Contemporary botanical gardens are not only centres for botanical research and education but also oases of silence and tranquility with several-hectar of horticultural display. Tender and exotic plants are cultivated in glasshouses (or greenhouses) and palm houses which create conditions similar to tropical regions such as temperature, humidity and light.

At present there are about two thousand institutions worldwide that can be considered botanical gardens. Through their efforts and care an estimated 10 thousand species of plants have been saved from extinction.
