W XV stuleciu Anglią wstrząsnęła wojna Dwóch Róż – długoletni konflikt między rodami Yorków a Lancasterów, który cechowały zdrada, kłamstwo i jedne z najkrwawszych bitew na angielskiej ziemi. W latach 1455-1487 królewski skarbiec opustoszał, a sama wojna doprowadziła do upadku obu rodów i pojawienia się na politycznej scenie nowej dynastii – Tudorów. Kiedy pracowałam nad moją ostatnią książką zatytułowaną The Princes in the Tower, zdawałam sobie sprawę, że w pewnym sensie przedstawiłam tylko część historii. Pisałam o końcowej fazie konfliktu malowniczo nazwanego wojną Dwóch Róż; konfliktu, który trwał przez ponad trzydzieści lat od roku 1455 do 1487. W zasadzie możemy mówić o dwóch wojnach Dwóch Róż; pierwszej, rozegranej w latach 1455–1471 pomiędzy królewskimi dynastiami Lancasterów i Yorków, oraz drugiej – toczącej się od roku 1483 do 1487 pomiędzy królewskimi dynastiami Yorków i Tudorów. Temat pierwszej z nich poruszyłam pokrótce w książce The Princes in the Tower, która w szczegółach opisuje drugą fazę wojen. Czułam, że prequel mógłby być następną ciekawą książką. Niniejszą publikację poświęcam więc historii Lancasterów i Yorków oraz pierwszej wojnie Dwóch Róż.

W trakcie moich badań dotarłam do wielu źródeł, zarówno dawnych, jak i współczesnych. Większość tych ostatnich dotyczyła praktycznego i wojskowego aspektu mojego tematu. Niniejsza książka w naturalny sposób porusza te kwestie, w niektórych częściach szczegółowo, ale moim głównym zamiarem było ukazanie ludzkiej strony tej historii – uwikłanego w nią narodu i ważnych osobistości, głównych bohaterów jednej z najbardziej fascynujących oraz najdłuższych waśni w dziejach Anglii.

W sercu tej krwawej rozgrywki pomiędzy frakcjami znalazła się żałosna postać umysłowo niezrównoważonego Henryka VI, którego nieumiejętność rządzenia i psychiczne upośledzenie wywołały polityczną destabilizację, niezadowolenie społeczne oraz konflikty pomiędzy wielkimi magnatami ziemskimi, a te z kolei ostatecznie doprowadziły do wojny i zaciętej walki o tron. Głównym rywalem Henryka był Ryszard Plantagenet, trzeci książę Yorku, człowiek, który powinien zasiąść na tronie zgodnie z prawem primogenitury, w ówczesnym jej rozumieniu. Po śmierci Yorka przysługujące mu prawo do tronu odziedziczył jego syn, który objął rządy jako Edward IV, będący bezwzględnym, ale czarującym człowiekiem. To on miał ostatecznie zniszczyć dynastię Lancasterów.

Niniejsza książka jest również historią zaciekłej i zajadłej walki kobiety o prawa jej syna. Królowa i żona Henryka, Małgorzata Andegaweńska – oskarżona przez wrogów o podrzucenie bękarta do królewskiej kołyski – podjęła walkę w imieniu Lancasterów, nie ustając w niej przez wiele lat, i wbrew przeciwnościom pozornie nie do przezwyciężenia dochodziła praw swojego męża i syna. Już sam ten fakt jest niezwykły, jako że była kobietą żyjącą w brutalnym świecie mężczyzn, w którym większość przedstawicielek jej płci traktowano jak mienie ruchome, część majątku, osoby nic nie znaczące w życiu politycznym.

Na scenie tego widowiska zdrady i niezgody pojawia się również wiele innych postaci. Syn Małgorzaty, Edward Lancaster, uodporniony na przemoc w młodym wieku, gorszył sobie współczesnych faktem, iż wyjątkowo wcześnie stracił jakiekolwiek skrupuły. Ryszard Neville, szesnasty hrabia Warwick („Warwick Królotwórca”), był archetypowym poddanym późnego średniowiecza, niemal równym królowi, wynoszącym monarchów na tron i usuwającym ich z niego. W ostatecznym rozrachunku pozostał wierny jedynie sobie. Wojna Dwóch Róż nie tylko miała spowodować upadek królewskiej dynastii, ale również magnatów pokroju Warwicka.

Podjęłam próbę przedstawienia członków królewskich dynastii Lancasterów i Yorków jako osób z krwi i kości, z ich osobliwymi cechami charakteru oraz dziwactwami, a nie tylko nazwiska czy skomplikowane drzewa genealogiczne. Beaufortowie, nieślubni potomkowie Jana z Gandawy, panowali jako książęta na dworze i – jak twierdzą niektórzy – w łożnicy królowej. Królewskie pochodzenie Tudorów również budziło wątpliwości. Byli oni – tak jak Beaufortowie – niezwykle lojalni wobec dynastii Lancasterów, podając się później za członków ich rodu. Wśród bohaterów są również królowie – neurotyczny, ekstrawagancki Ryszard II oraz samozwańczy Henryk IV, których panowanie zmąciły bunty i zły stan zdrowia, oraz opanowany wojownik Henryk V, bohater ludu, którego błędna polityka zagraniczna doprowadziła do katastrofy za czasów jego syna, Henryka VI. Są i monarchinie: szykowna, amoralna Katarzyna de Valois, która po śmierci swojego męża Henryka V znalazła miłość w ramionach walijskiego dziedzica; oraz Elżbieta Woodville, której surowe piękno maskowało chciwość i bezwzględność. Ponadto niniejsza historia jest pełna barwnych, tajemniczych i tragicznych postaci: od cieszącego się złą sławą Jacka Cade’a, który doprowadził do wzniecenia buntu, do sadystycznego Johna Tiptofta, hrabiego Worcester; oprócz nich należy wymienić wielu innych: z jednej strony rzeszę potężnych lordów, z drugiej – delikatne i nieszczęśliwe córki Warwicka, Izabelę i Annę Neville. Wszyscy byli zaangażowani w konflikt w taki czy inny sposób. Jest to w istocie historia frakcji, ale nie można zapomnieć, że stworzyli je ludzie, i to właśnie oni czynią tę opowieść tak pasjonującą.

Historia wojny Dwóch Róż została opowiedziana wielokrotnie przez wielu historyków. Jednak nie należy dziś do dobrego tonu doszukiwać się, zgodnie z punktem widzenia Tudorów, jej zarzewia pięćdziesiąt lat wcześniej, w usunięciu Ryszarda II z tronu. Aby zrozumieć przyczyny wojny Dwóch Róż oraz dynastyczne dziedzictwo głównych bohaterów, musimy cofnąć się jeszcze dalej, do wykrystalizowania się warstwy magnatów królewskiej krwi wywodzących się od Edwarda III, najbardziej płodnego króla z dynastii Plantagenetów. Niniejsza książka opowiada zatem nie tylko historię wojny Dwóch Róż, ale również dzieje dynastii Lancasterów i Yorków aż do roku 1471.

Źródła dotyczące tego okresu są skromne i często niejednoznaczne. Jednakże w ciągu ostatnich stu lat przeprowadzono wiele badań, aby choć trochę rozjaśnić to, co często opisuje się jako zmierzch XV stulecia. Wiele nieporozumień zostało odrzuconych, ale konflikt dynastyczny nadal wprawia w zakłopotanie. Moim celem było wyeliminowanie tych niejasności i podjęcie próby przedstawienia historii chronologicznie, wyjaśnienia problemów królewskiej sukcesji w czasach, w których nie obowiązywały żadne określone reguły dziedziczenia. Próbowałam również ożywić XV-wieczny świat, wprowadzając tyle historycznych szczegółów, na ile pozwalała objętość książki, aby uczynić temat doniosłym dla każdego czytelnika, zarówno wykształconego w tej materii, jak i słabiej znającego rzeczone zagadnienie. Przede wszystkim jednak starałam się ponownie opowiedzieć zadziwiającą i chwilami posępną historię walki o władzę na najwyższych szczeblach, w którą zaangażowane były najbardziej charyzmatyczne postaci angielskich dziejów.

Historia rozpoczyna się w 1400 roku morderstwem jednego króla, a kończy w roku 1471 zabójstwem innego. Można powiedzieć, że jedna zbrodnia bezpośrednio wynika z drugiej. Niniejsza książka, przybliżająca wydarzenia między rokiem 1400 a 1471, odpowiada na pytanie: jak do tego doszło?
