‘Squirrels like the forest. They live in a forest, but you live in a house. You can’t live in the forest, but I have an idea. We can live in a forest for a short time,’ Granny says.
‘What?’ Melinda asks.
‘Yes, I have a tent. We can go on Friday, we can go with your friend and we sleep in the forest, what do you think?’
‘Wow!’ says Melinda, ‘That’s great!’
Melinda in the Forest is a short story about a girl and her Granny who go to the forest and learn about the animals. Granny teaches Melinda to respect the animals and to be good for plants too. The story is written in simple English so as to make the story easy for children and foreigners who learn English.

Językiem angielskim interesuję się od kiedy rozpoczęłam jego naukę. Od 2006 nauczam języka angielskiego, początkowo w ramach organizacji studenckiej, w formie pro bono. Od 2010 prowadzę własną firmą zajmującą się usługami edukacyjnymi w zakresie języka angielskiego – Personal English Tutor. Prowadzę stronę internetową dla uczniów języka angielskiego opartą na zadaniach interaktywnych programu hotpotatoes. Aktualnie współpracuję z firmą informatyczną w zakresie stworzenia serwisu dla uczniów i nauczycieli.
W ramach studiów bibliotekoznawczych na UJ, uzyskałam stypendium ERASMUS, które pozwoliło mi na wyjazd na angielską uczelnię. Tam poczułam przypływ chęci, który skierował mnie na filologię angielską.
W 2012 wydałam pierwszą książkę, pt. „Propozycje zadań, ćwiczeń i gier do nauki języka angielskiego. Poradnik dla nauczycieli i lektorów – poziom elementary.”

Alnmith is a small village, but it is very beautiful. There is a forest, a river and a beach. There are horses, cows, dogs and cats.
This is Melinda’s family.
Mum is 35 years old and dad is 37 years old. Melinda’s mum is a teacher and Daddy is a teacher too. Mum teaches English and Dad teaches French. They love languages. Melinda likes languages too. Her favourite language is English, but she speaks French too.
Melinda’s French is not very good, but Dad teaches her on Saturday and Sunday. They play in the garden, they cook, they eat and speak French. Only French. Mum is not happy, because she doesn’t speak French well. Melinda can talk to Daddy about something she does not want to talk with her Mummy. Melinda is very clever.
Melinda’s grandma is Emma. She lives with them. She is 68 years old, but she likes games and animals. On Monday and Tuesday Granny and Melinda play scrabble. They walk to the forest on Wednesday. They cook on Thursday and they go to Mr Smith on Friday.
Mr Smith is Melinda’s neighbour. He has very beautiful animals. He has horses, pigs, cows, and a dog. Melinda likes his dog. Its name is Corky. Granny likes horses, but horses are big and Melinda likes small animals.
Today is Monday. It is July. It is sunny and warm. It is summer and Melinda does not go to school. This is what she says, ‘I love when it is warm. I can swim, I can play, I can see my schoolmates too, but I love playing and talking with Granny. She knows everything and tells stories about the village, animals, and people. Today, granny wants to play scrabble, but I don’t want!’
‘Melinda, come here.’
‘Why granny?’ Melinda asks.
‘Today we play scrabble,’ Granny says.
‘Granny I like scrabble, but it is summer. I want to do something else. Can we go to the forest, please?’
‘We can Melinda.’
‘Thank you.’
Melinda and Granny go to the forest. There are a lot of trees, birds and flowers. Melinda likes beech trees. They are so big. You can have a house on a beech tree, but Melinda does not have a beech tree in her garden. There are trees, but small ones, and daddy cannot make a tree house.
‘What is this?’ asks Melinda.
‘My child, it is a squirrel,’ says Granny.
‘What does it do, granny?’
‘Oh, Melinda, squirrels look for nuts in the summer.’
‘Oh nuts, do we have a walnut in the garden? I want to have a squirrel.’
‘I’m very sorry Melinda, but we don’t. We have apples and pears, gooseberry and raspberries and strawberries, but we do not have a walnut.’
‘Oh, but can I have a squirrel, Granny?’ asks Melinda.
‘You can’t. Squirrels live in the forest, they do not live at home.’
‘Why not?’
‘And where do you live Melinda?’ asks Granny.
‘I? Granny, of course I live in the house with you, Mummy and Daddy.’
‘Oh course, Melinda, and do you want to live in the park?’
‘No! It is cold in the winter in the forest, there is snow, and there is no TV or computer,’ answers Melinda.
‘Yes, Melinda. You are right,’ says granny, ‘squirrels like the forest. They live in a forest, but you live in a house. You can’t live in the forest, but I have an idea. We can live in a forest for a short time.’
‘What?’
‘Yes, I have a tent. We can go on Friday, we can go with your friend and we sleep in the forest’
‘Wow!’ says Melinda, ‘That’s great, can we sleep in the forest this Friday?’
‘Are you sure?’
‘Yes, I am.’
‘Okay, we sleep in a tent in the forest this Friday, do you want to go with your friend?’
‘I want to be with you, you always tell stories and know everything.’
‘Good,’ says Granny.
Granny and Melinda come back home.
Melinda sees daddy and mummy and says, ‘Granny and I have a plan.’
‘What plan is it?’ asks mummy.
‘We want to sleep in a tent on Friday,’ says Melinda.
‘In a tent? On Friday? In the garden?’ asks daddy.
‘No, no, not in the garden. Granny and I go to the forest and we sleep there on Friday, only Granny and I,’ says Melinda.
She is very happy now.
‘I know the forest, I have a tent, I know animals and trees,’ says granny, ‘Melinda and I want to see animals and plants.’
Mum and dad look happy now too.
‘The forest is beautiful Melinda,’ says daddy, ‘we live in a village, so it is good you want to know about animals, flowers and plants. I think you can do it not only on Friday, but every day in the summer. It is a very good idea.’
Melinda packs her clothes up. She packs her toys and she waits for Friday. She wants Friday tomorrow, but it is Monday!
Tuesday, the time is so slow! There are still 3 days and Melinda wants to go now.
