Oriental Studies and Arts. Contributions Dedicated to Professor Tadeusz Majda on His 85th Birthday - ebook

This volume is respectfully dedicated to Professor Tadeusz Majda, a renowned scholar in the fields of Oriental Studies and Art History. His numerous publications attest to his preeminent scholarly standing. But it is not the high number of his books and articles that alone mark him as a true teacher and a man of knowledge. It is the position he holds among his learned colleagues; the intense interest in his works shown by his disciples and students; the respect that he has earned among the public; and his values, wisdom,
and gentle sense of humour that have all made him a true scholar, one to be followed. And of course there is his admirable elegance and charm.
The scholarly fields represented by Professor Majda, Oriental Studies with a special focus on Turkology and the history of Oriental Art — mainly the art of the Middle East — are disciplines which require skills in multiple languages, a knowledge of history, a love of literature, a taste for the arts, an interest in Asia and many other traits and qualities, all of which have been acquired by Professor Majda.

FRAGMENT KSIĄŻKI

PREFACE

This volume is respectfully dedicated to Professor Tadeusz Majda, a renowned scholar in the fields of Oriental Studies and Art History. His numerous publications attest to his preeminent scholarly standing. But it is not the high number of his books and articles that alone mark him as a true teacher and a man of knowledge. It is the position he holds among his learned colleagues; the intense interest in his works shown by his disciples and students; the respect that he has earned among the public; and his values, wisdom, and gentle sense of humour that have all made him a true scholar, one to be followed.

Scholarship requires an institutional framework. Professor Majda devoted a great amount of his time and energy to the organization of Oriental Studies at the University of Warsaw. In 2015 Professor Majda celebrated his 60^(th) year there. For many years he headed the University’s Turkology Department, served as Director of the Institute of Oriental Studies (1981-1984; now the Faculty of Oriental Studies) and as Dean of the Faculty of Modern Languages (1985-1986). Beginning in 1990, he served as the head of Eastern European Studies, a part of the University’s Institute (now Faculty) of Oriental Studies, for over 20 years.

As a result of his deep interest in the arts of the Middle East, Professor Majda invested 25 years in heading the Collection of Oriental Art in the National Museum in Warsaw. He put much effort into securing for Oriental Art its rightful place within Oriental Studies.

Professor Majda’s work has been acknowledged at home and abroad. He has been awarded the title of Doctor Honoris Causa by the University of Ankara (2004), the Knight’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta (2014), the Badge of Honour “Bene Merito” (2014) and the Gold Medal for Merit to Culture – Gloria Artis (2014).

We are all fortunate that Professor Majda invested his talents, time and passions in Oriental Studies and Oriental Art. Those who have benefitted from the fruits of his work include not only generations of Orientalists, but art historians, scholars and students of literature, arts, languages and many other subjects, and the broad public.

We are all deeply thankful and therefore dedicate this volume with our best wishes and warmest regards to Professor Tadeusz Majda as a small token of our gratitude.

Professor Tadeusz Majda – Biography of a Scholar

In this article the attempt was made to present the variety of Professor Majda’s interests in numerous branches of Oriental studies, not only in Turkology, but also in Arabic studies and the field of Islamic art. The versatility of Professor’s interests is accompanied by enormous passion with which he undertakes new challenges and devotes himself to his work. Professor Tadeusz Majda can certainly be proud of his rich scholarly achievements, numerous successes in the fields of teaching and education, as well as his active participation in the university life in his capacity as Head of the Department of Turkish Studies, Director of the Institute of Oriental Studies and Dean of the Faculty of Modern Languages. Not only Professor’s research activities, but also his promotion of Turkish art and culture, as well as Islamic art, deserve a special attention. His achievements in the field of Turkish studies have been acknowledged by the Senate of the Ankara University that distinguished Professor with the title of doctor honoris causa in 2003. In the same year, the Turkish Cultural Foundation awarded Professor with a medal for the promotion of the Turkish language and culture. In 2014, Professor Tadeusz Majda was granted the following awards and prizes:

– Knight’s Cross of the Order of Polonia Restituta – bestowed by the President of Poland on February 20^(th) 2014,

– Bene Merito Badge of Honour – bestowed by the Minister of Foreign Affairs on May 26^(th) 2014,

– Gloria Artis Gold Medal for Merit to Culture – bestowed by the Minister of Culture and National Heritage on June 11^(th) 2014.

The list of publications by Professor Majda was presented in 2006 in the book Oriental Studies in Art and Culture in Honour of Professor Tadeusz Majda (Warsaw, Wydawnictwo Akademickie Dialog, 2006). Therefore, it was necessary to include to the prsent volume the amended bibliography supplemented with the latest data from 2012 (Szkice z dziejów polskiej orientalistyki , Wydawnictwa Uniwersytetu Warszawskiego, Warsaw 2012). In this part of the article there is also provided information about Professor’s teaching activities, participation in congresses and conferences, lectures delivered by him abroad and his work activities in the National Museum in Warsaw.

Professor Tadeusz Majda was born in 1930 in Skolimów near Warsaw (present day Konstancin-Jeziorna) into a family of school teachers. After World War II he was enrolled in a high school in Słupsk. Having passed his A-level exam, at the suggestion of his teachers he decided to pursue Oriental studies at the Institute of Oriental Studies at the University of Warsaw, which in 1951 announced the launch of regular full-time studies in nine fields.

After passing the entrance exam and a successful interview, Tadeusz Majda started Turkish studies under the supervision of Professors Ananiasz Zajączkowski, Jan Reychman and Józef Bielawski. The chosen course of studies included learning three languages of the Middle East: Turkish, Arabic and Persian as well as the literature and history of Turkey, Arab countries and Iran. Interests of his lecturers, and his master’s Professor Ananiasz Zajączkowski in particular, strongly influenced Professor Tadeusz Majda’s scholarly pursuits, which were mainly concentrated on the Ottoman studies and the languages of the Kipchak group. His interest in Turkish art and, furthermore, in Islamic art came in the 1970s, during the preparation of the catalogue of Persian and Turkish manuscripts. This interest was consequently increased when Professor Tadeusz Majda worked with MA Alina Mrozowska on the album of miniatures of Turkish costumes and genre scenes. This album was kept in the University of Warsaw Library and originated from the royal library of the Polish king Stanisław August Poniatowski.

Professor Tadeusz Majda’s Master’s thesis focused on the language of the collection of poems by Sultan Süleyman the Magnificent who used an artistic name Muhibbi . The collection was based on an early copy of a manuscript from the University of Warsaw Library. Professor’s PhD thesis The topic of Yusuf ile Züleyha in Turkish literature until the fifteenth century (in Polish) was dedicated to one of the most widespread in the Middle East and Central Asia literary plots rooted in the Koran and commentaries to the Koran. Tadeusz Majda’s habilitation dissertation The development of Turkish language in the seventeenth century (in Polish) is a study of the seventeenth century Ottoman language in Spanish language, carried out on the basis of the manuscript from the collection of the Wroclaw University Library.

Professor Tadeusz Majda served in various roles at the University of Warsaw. For many years he was Head of Turkology, Director of the Oriental Institute (1981-1984), (now Faculty of Oriental Studies) and Dean of the Faculty of Modern Languages (1985-1986). Moreover, Professor Tadeusz Majda headed the Centre for East European and Central Asia Studies at the Institute of Oriental Studies for more than 20 years since 1990.

Professor’s academic work has always been linked to the University of Warsaw. Nevertheless, he also actively maintained contacts with institutions devoted to the Oriental studies abroad, where he conducted his research, lectured and participated in symposia, conferences and research projects. As a grant holder, Professor Tadeusz Majda carried out research in Egyptian archives and libraries in 1961. He also completed numerous study and research internships – in Turkey (1968), Cambridge – thanks to the British Council scholarship (1974), University of Vilnius (1974), University of Strasbourg (1978), University of Sarajevo (1978) and University of Minnesota (1988). Moreover, Professor Tadeusz Majda did his research internship in the field of Islamic art in the museums of New York, Boston and Washington (1992), and at the University of Vilnius (1993). Professor Tadeusz Majda gave lectures in the following institutions devoted to the Oriental studies: University of Cambridge, Indiana University Bloomington, “L’Orientale” University of Naples, University of Strasbourg and University of Bamberg.

Important dates in Professor Tadeusz Majda’s academic career:

– 1955 – employment as an aide (in the fifth year of studies) in the Institute of Oriental Studies – Turkology.

– 1956 – Master’s degree and employment as an assistant in the Institute of Oriental Studies – Turkology.

– 1965 – PhD degree.

– 1990 – Head of Centre for East European and Central Asia Studies at the Institute of Oriental Studies (now Centre for East European Studies) at the University of Warsaw, which was called the Seminar for Nationality Problems of the Soviet Union and Central Europe from 1988 to 1990.

– 1982 – Habilitated doctor degree.

– 1990 – Associate professor degree.

– 1998 – Professor degree.

– 2004 – Doctor honoris causa of the University of Ankara.¹

Although it has been almost 60 years, since Professor Tadeusz Majda received his Master’s degree, his work and interest in the research on Turkish language, literature, culture and art, as well as Islamic art in general, have been flourishing and result every year in new articles, books, exhibitions and research projects.

A wide range of Professor’s interests is illustrated by his work and activities, showing him as a scholar (e.g. through his work carried out on the Ottoman and Turkish texts, publications, reviews, participation in academic symposia and organization of conferences), lecturer (delivering lectures, publishing academic handbooks and anthologies, as well as supervision of Master’s and PhD theses), and curator of the National Museum in Warsaw (preparing exhibitions, working on the catalogues and articles about art). On the one hand, Professor’s academic work has been mostly concentrated on the Ottoman language literature and Turkic languages from the Kipchak group (Mamluk-Kipchak, the language of the Golden Horde and Chagatai). On the other hand, it includes didactic materials and lectures too. Last but not least, Professor’s publications have been devoted to the Islamic art and culture with a particular focus on the Turkish and Persian art. Interviews and meetings with his students on the numerous occasions have confirmed Professor’s broad and multifaceted knowledge and his ability to share it with others. Therefore, it will certainly not be an exaggeration to call Professor Tadeusz Majda the Renaissance Man. Indeed, very few researches undertake as many various challenges as him, starting with publishing works on language, literature, translation, culture, the Oriental art, and ending with architecture, costumes and weaponry. Even a single glance at Professor’s bibliography gives a testimony of his knowledge and passions.

Professor’s work in the National Museum of Warsaw constitutes another significant part of his academic and promotional activities. In 1989 he became Head of Oriental Arts Collections that include Chinese, Japanese, Buddhist and Islamic art. During more than 20 years the department organized several dozens of exhibitions in Warsaw and one abroad (Istanbul 1999), as well as prepared and published more than 10 exhibition and collection catalogues. In cooperation with PhD Małgorzata Redlak and MA Maciej Kwaśniewski, Professor Tadeusz Majda personally organized exhibitions in the field of Islamic art that well illustrated its abundant presence in the Polish collections. They included Persian art of the Qajar period, War and Peace. Turkish art treasures in the Polish collections, as well as Masterpieces of Persian art from Polish collections. Exhibitions were accompanied by academic symposia attended by foreign scholars and by a range of public lectures (cf. Bibliography).

Apart from conducting Master and PhD seminars in the field of Turkology, Professor Tadeusz Majda currently delivers the following lectures to his students: Introduction to Turkology and Aesthetics of the East and West. Moreover, he has been carrying out seminars on various topics at other universities in Poland and abroad, as well as he has taken part in numerous conferences and academic meetings.
