Ever since I was little I kept hearing stories about the day all the windows blew out of the house. I was told my grandfather was trying to summon ghosts with some friends of his. He was also a librarian and passed his love of books onto his son and grandson. I never met my grandfather, but his poem – _GHOST –_ is known by many residents around Szczyrk. I still have the original in my collections.

Talking to the author of the book you are holding I asked myself: Why did I enjoy translating it so much? Was it the setting – the highland landscapes around Szczyrk the book so wonderfully evokes? Or the story filled with cults and crimes and cruel twists of fate which literally shake this little town to its rocky, mountainous foundations? It was much more than that. First of all, I loved the characters – teenagers, adults, beings from parallel dimensions, video game avatars – they were all so well drawn, so memorable and likeable. Then there were the lives they led – filled with all sorts of troubles and challenges – loss of loved ones, sexual desires, addictions to various substances and odd passions, always moving in search of answers and adventures. There is trauma too – complex histories which shape the lives of the people we meet in the book, as well as international explorations and intrigues, topped with time travel to wondrously dreamy and magical parallel dimensions. For some, young love was the biggest worry. For others, lack of money or domestic violence. Then there were those either contemplating or investigating murders – yes, this novel is a wonderful mashup of genres – love story, science fiction, historical drama, crime thriller and archeological adventure in search of great treasures with the future of our world at stake! Anyone who loves reading will find something to love in it – I personally cannot wait to get down to Szczyrk and explore a region I only know through the pages of this wonderfully twisted and troubling tale... Powerful beings and cosmic forces affect the lives of local people, of tourists from far off, of those in the past, present and future of our world – a truly epic and wildly exciting tale!
