Athenian women take the assembly. Aristophanes' Women in Council (Assemblywomen) is Praxagora's coup: shared goods, shared beds, a utopia that trips on its own joke. Satire of democracy, sex, and the dream of a fair city - croaking with laughter, not a programme. Property in common, husbands in a queue, old men complaining in the street. The jokes are rude; the politics are the joke. Athens imagined as a household, and the household mutinies. Read in English, unabridged.
