Alice was very tired. She sat by her sister on the riverbank. She had nothing to do. Alice looked at her sister's book. It had no pictures. It had no talking. Alice thought, "What is a book for?" She thought, "It needs pictures or talking."

The day was hot. Alice felt very sleepy. She thought about making a daisy chain. She wondered if it was worth the effort. Then a White Rabbit ran past her. The Rabbit had pink eyes.

Alice did not think this was strange. The Rabbit said, "Oh dear! I will be late!" Alice later thought this was odd. But at that moment, it seemed normal. Then the Rabbit took out a watch. It pulled the watch from its coat pocket. The Rabbit looked at the watch. It hurried away.

Alice stood up quickly. She had never seen a rabbit with a watch. She had never seen a rabbit with a coat pocket. Alice felt very curious. She ran after the Rabbit. She saw it go down a rabbit-hole. The hole was under a hedge.

Alice went down the hole too. She did not think about how to get out. The rabbit-hole was like a tunnel. It went straight for a while. Then it dropped down fast. Alice could not stop herself. She fell down a deep well.

The well was very deep. Or Alice fell very slowly. She had time to look around. She wondered what would happen. Alice tried to look down. It was too dark to see. Then she looked at the well's sides. She saw cupboards there. There were also bookshelves. Maps and pictures hung on pegs.

Alice took a jar from a shelf. It said "ORANGE MARMALADE". But the jar was empty. Alice felt sad about this. She did not want to drop it. She feared hurting someone below. So she put it in a cupboard.

Alice thought to herself. She said, "This fall is so big." "Falling down stairs is nothing." "Everyone at home will think I am brave." "I would not tell them if I fell from a house." This was probably true.

Alice kept falling down. She wondered if it would stop. Alice said, "How far have I fallen?" "I must be near the earth's center." "That is four thousand miles down." Alice had learned this in school. She liked to say these words. She said, "What is my Latitude or Longitude?" Alice did not know what these words meant. But she thought they sounded important.

Alice started talking again. She said, "Will I fall through the earth?" "It will be funny to see people." "They walk with their heads down." "I will ask them the country's name." Alice thought, "Is this New Zealand or Australia?" She tried to bow while falling. She thought, "They will think I am silly." "I should not ask them." "Maybe I will see the name written."

Alice kept falling. She had nothing else to do. Alice started talking again. She said, "Dinah will miss me tonight." Dinah was Alice's cat. "I hope they give her milk." "Dinah, I wish you were here." "There are no mice in the air." "But you could catch a bat." "Bats are like mice." "Do cats eat bats?" Alice wondered.

Alice felt sleepy. She kept asking, "Do cats eat bats?" Sometimes she asked, "Do bats eat cats?" She could not answer herself. Alice began to fall asleep. She dreamed she walked with Dinah. She asked Dinah, "Did you eat a bat?" Then she landed with a thump. She landed on sticks and dry leaves. The fall was finished.

Alice was not hurt. She quickly stood up. She looked up, but it was dark. A long passage was in front of her. The White Rabbit was still there. It was hurrying down the passage. Alice ran very fast after it. She heard the Rabbit say. It said, "Oh my, I am so late!" This happened as it turned a corner.

Alice turned the corner. The Rabbit was gone. She was in a long, low hall. Lamps hung from the roof. They lit up the hall. Many doors were in the hall. All the doors were locked. Alice tried every door. She walked sadly in the middle. She wondered how to leave.

Alice saw a small glass table. It had three legs. Only a tiny golden key was on it. Alice thought it was for a door. But the key did not fit any lock. The locks were too big, or the key was too small.

Alice looked around again. She saw a low curtain. She had not seen it before. Behind it was a small door. The door was about fifteen inches high. Alice tried the golden key. It fit the lock perfectly. She was very happy.

Alice opened the door. It led to a small passage. The passage was like a rat-hole. She knelt down to look. She saw a beautiful garden. Alice wanted to leave the dark hall. She wanted to walk among the flowers. She wanted to see the fountains. But her head could not fit through.

Alice thought, "My head would fit." "But my shoulders would not." "I wish I could become small." "Like a telescope closing." Many strange things had happened. Alice thought anything was possible. Waiting by the door was useless. Alice went back to the table. She hoped to find another key. Or a book about shrinking.

This time she saw a small bottle. Alice said, "This was not here before." The bottle had a paper label. It said "DRINK ME" in big letters. The bottle said "Drink me." But Alice was smart. She would not drink it fast. Alice said, "I will check first." "I will see if it says 'poison'."

She had read stories about children. They got hurt because they forgot rules. For example, a hot poker burns you. A deep cut with a knife bleeds. Alice knew that poison would hurt her. The bottle did not say "poison." So Alice decided to taste it. It tasted very good. It tasted like many foods. Like cherry pie and pineapple. It also tasted like roast turkey. Alice quickly drank it all.

Alice said, "What a strange feeling!" "I am shrinking like a telescope." She was now only ten inches tall. Alice was happy about this. She was now small enough for the door. She waited to see if she would shrink more. Alice felt a little worried. She said, "I might disappear completely." "Like a candle flame going out." She wondered what that would be like. She tried to imagine a blown-out flame. But she had never seen such a thing.

Nothing else happened. Alice decided to go to the garden. But she forgot the golden key. She went back to the table. She could not reach the key. She saw it clearly through the glass. Alice tried to climb the table leg. But it was too smooth. She got very tired from trying. Alice sat down and cried.

Alice spoke sharply to herself. She said, "Stop crying now!" Alice often gave herself good advice. But she rarely followed it. She sometimes scolded herself hard. This made her cry. Once she hit her own ears. She had cheated herself in a game. Alice liked to pretend she was two people. But now she thought, "It is no use." "I am too small to be one person."

Alice saw a small glass box. It was under the table. She opened it. Inside was a very small cake. The cake had "EAT ME" written on it. The words were made of currants. Alice said, "I will eat it." "If I grow big, I can get the key." "If I grow small, I can go under the door." "Either way, I will get into the garden." "I do not care what happens."

Alice ate a small piece. She asked herself, "Which way?" She put her hand on her head. She wanted to feel if she changed. Alice was surprised. She stayed the same size. Usually, cake does not change you. But Alice expected strange things. So, staying the same felt boring. Alice ate the rest of the cake.

The Mouse seemed important. It told everyone to sit down. "I will make you dry enough!" the Mouse said. They all sat in a large circle. The Mouse sat in the middle. Alice watched the Mouse closely. She feared getting sick if she stayed wet.

The Mouse cleared its throat. It asked if they were ready. "This is the driest thing I know," the Mouse said. "Be quiet, please!" It started to read. "William the Conqueror was helped by the Pope. The English soon gave up to him. They had no leaders. They were used to new rulers." The Mouse named two earls. The Lory shivered and said, "Ugh!"

The Mouse frowned. "Excuse me," it said politely. "Did you speak?" The Lory quickly said, "Not me!" The Mouse said, "I thought you did." It continued reading. "Edwin and Morcar supported William. Even Stigand, a church leader, thought it was best to—" The Duck asked, "Found what?" The Mouse answered angrily, "Found it! You know what 'it' means." The Duck said, "I know what 'it' means when I find something. It is usually a frog or a worm. What did the church leader find?"
