Matthew says: "I do not understand."

Stationmaster says: "Ask the girl. She can explain. She has a tongue." Stationmaster goes away. Matthew must talk to girl.

Matthew goes to girl. She watches Matthew. She has red hair. She has freckles. She has big eyes.

Matthew does not speak. Girl stands up. She holds her bag. She holds out hand.

Girl says: "You are Matthew Cuthbert? I am glad. I think you come. I would sleep there. It is lovely. You come tomorrow."

Matthew says: "You are tired. We go one mile."

Girl says: "Oh, Mr. Cuthbert. What was that place?"

Matthew says: "You mean the Avenue. It is pretty."

Girl says: "Pretty is not right. It is wonderful. It makes me ache. Do you have ache?"

Matthew says: "I do not have it."

Girl says: "I have this ache. Call it White Way. I imagine new names. We go home soon. I am glad. I am sorry. I have no home. It is pretty."

They see a pond. Water has many colors. Frogs sing there.

Matthew says: "That is Barry's pond."

Girl says: "I do not like name. I call it Lake. It gives me thrill. Do you have thrill?"

Matthew says: "Yes, grubs give thrill. I hate them."

Girl says: "That is not same thrill. Why call it Barry's?"
