The night is not a uniform break. It is an orderly

process in which sleep goes through successive

phases. That is why some dreams are longer and

more variable, while others take the form of a

short shot. When you know the rhythm of the

night, you will remember dreams more easily and

understand more quickly where their different

intensity comes from. Sleep is arranged in cycles.

One cycle usually lasts about an hour and a half,

although in different people it may be slightly

shorter or longer. There are two main types of

sleep in each cycle: NREM and REM. NREM is a

dream in which there are no rapid eye

movements. REM is a dream in which such fast

movements appear. It may sound surprising

because you have your eyelids closed during your

sleep. The eyelids may be closed, and the eyeballs

can still move under them. In REM, these

movements are more pronounced and more

frequent. In some people, this can be seen even

from the outside as a gentle sliding of the eyes

confirmed by measuring the signal around the

eyes. Electrodes placed on the skin near the eyes

record the changes that occur when the eyeball

moves. This is a practical REM trademark. It has

nothing to do with opening your eyes during

sleep. The most important thing is what follows

from it for dreams. In NREM, the body usually

goes into a calmer mode. Breathing and heart rate

often stabilize. The body rests intensively. In this

phase, dreams can also appear, but they are often

shorter. They often take the form of a single scene,

a simple action, or a single clear image. REM is

more dynamic. In this phase, dreams with more

details, more place changes, and a clearer

sequence of events are more common. That's why

many people say that morning dreams are more

cinematic. It has a simple reason. In the first part

of the night, there is usually more NREM. In the

second part of the night, the share of REM

increases. The closer you get to the morning, the

more often you get to longer REM sections. This

increases the chance of a dream full of images.

There is also another important element. The

memory of sleep depends on the moment of

✦ 6 ✦awakening. If you wake up closer to REM, it's

easier to catch a "hot" sleep. If you wake up from a

deeper NREM, you may have the impression of

heaviness and a slower start. Then the dream can

be more difficult to grasp, even if it appeared. It's

not a question of sleep quality. It's a matter of

phase and moment of awakening. In practice, the

night consists of several cycles. Each cycle changes

the proportions of NREM and REM. This creates

natural windows in which dreams are more easily

remembered. Many people also have short

awakenings between phases. Sometimes it takes a

few seconds. Sometimes a dozen. Sometimes you

don't notice them. Such short awakenings are very

important, because that's when sleep has the best

chance of "clinging" in memory. If you change

position, get up, reach for your phone or turn on

the light as soon as you wake up, your brain

quickly switches to day mode. Then the dream

disappears. That's why the first seconds count

with dreams in work. The simplest rule is: when

you wake up, stay still for a moment. Take a calm

breath. Try to catch one piece. This could be the

place. It could be an object. It could be color. It

could be a sentence. The first element is the

fragments often come back. If the dream was

short, the anchor may be all you need. If the

dream was long, the anchor will lead you to the

main thread. It is also worth remembering that a

short sleep does not mean less value. A short sleep

can be like a precise sign. A long sleep can be like

a map with several paths. Both are useful if you

can get one thing out of them to check the next

day. Let's take a quick example. You dream that

you are holding a cup with a crack. And that's it.

It's a simple picture. Its strength is in function.

The mug is used so that there is something in it

and it can be used. The crack suggests that

something is not fully stable. How to check it in

practice the next day? Ask yourself one question

in the morning: what needs to be strengthened,

refined, or repaired today before it works well?

Then make one small move. Tighten the detail. Set

a date. Ask for confirmation. Take care of

something that "leaks" sometimes or energy.

Thanks to this, the dream turns into a concrete

decision. Let's take a longer example. You dream

that you are riding a train, you change trains, you

are looking for a ticket, you meet a familiar

a bright building. Such a dream has several

scenes. Here, instead of taking everything at once,

you look for an axis. The axis is a topic that binds

events. In this example, it may be direction and

change. Then you choose one element to check.

For example, a ticket. The ticket is a symbol of

access and confirmation. What can you do the

next day? Check if you have the necessary codes,

documents, passwords, confirmations. Or

complete the formality that you are putting off.

This simple action often quickly shows that the

dream touched a real topic. Knowing about sleep

cycles also helps you better understand the

morning. If you most often remember dreams just

before getting up, it is usually because at this time

the REM is longer and the awakening is closer to

the end of the phase. If you want to increase the

number of remembered dreams, you don't have to

change your whole life. Just calm down the first

minute after waking up. Leave the phone for later.

Give yourself a few seconds to anchor. Write down

two or three sentences. That's all. Thanks to this,

you use the natural rhythm of the night. Simple

conclusions flow from this chapter. The night

there is usually more NREM, in the second half,

more REM. REM is more often associated with

longer, more variable dreams. NREM more often

gives shorter and more condensed dreams. Closed

eyelids do not prevent the eyeballs from moving

movements that occur under the eyelids. And if

you want to remember your dreams more often,

the key is the moment you wake up and what you

do for the first seconds. Give yourself a short

buffer. Catch the anchor. Save. Then check one

application during the day. This is how the ability

to read dreams calmly, concretely, and effectively

is built.

awakenings

Most of the dreams run away not because they

didn't exist, but because they weren't stored in

memory. The moment right after sleep is crucial.

This is when you decide whether you will

remember anything from it. Micro-awakenings

are natural, short transitions between sleep

phases. They occur in everyone. Often even

several times during the night. They last from one

to several seconds. Sometimes they are

unnoticeable. Sometimes you catch their trail as a

sudden awareness that "something was

dreaming". It is this moment that gives the best

chance to consolidate the dream. Micro-

awakening is not a complete awakening. It's a

transitional state. The body is still resting, but

consciousness is activated for a moment. In these

few seconds, sleep is still close. An image, sound,

word, or feeling is like a shadow that you can

catch or lose. If during this time you do not move,

phone, you have a real chance to keep sleep in

your memory. Awakening from a full sleep often

blurs the whole picture. Micro-awakening works

differently. It is the gateway between sleep and

wakefulness, through which you can pass slowly

and consciously. It is crucial to know its

symptoms. How do you know that you just had a

micro-awakening? Usually one of the three

signals. First: a sudden thought or association that

arises for no apparent reason. Second: the feeling

that "something has just happened". Third: a very

quick image or sentence that flashed through

consciousness. Many people ignore these signals,

treating them as random. Meanwhile, they are

traces of a dream that has just had a chance to

pass into memory. If you stay still at this point,

close your eyes, and focus on the first association,

you can recover more. Micro-awakening is not an

obstacle. It's an opportunity. It allows you to

capture the dream before it disappears. When the

awakening lasts only a few seconds, the brain still

has access to fresh images. Usually, it is enough to

repeat in your mind one word or one sentence that

has appeared. It works like a key. It leads to the

five to ten seconds, the dream trail can blur.

Example: You wake up for a moment, and for a

split second, you see a picture of an old bridge.

You don't know what you've been dreaming about

yet. But the bridge remains. If you stay in this

bridge - after a while, the transition scene,

conversation, feeling of uncertainty, or the goal

you were going to may return. If you got up right

away, you probably wouldn't remember anything.

Micro-awakenings thus give access to sleep

through a single point of attachment. The second

example: You wake up feeling anxious, but you

don't know why yet. Instead of pushing them

away, you stay with that feeling for a while. After a

dozen or so seconds, you are reminded of a

dreamy scene in which you lost your documents

or could not enter a building. Then there is an

association with a situation in life in which you are

waiting for approval, a decision, or confirmation.

You see the connection. And you have a specific

conclusion: where can I make sure today not to

feel like someone "without access"? Micro-

awakenings are a tool. To use them, you need to

change your morning habit. If you immediately

reach for the phone, you break the connection

with sleep. If you get out of bed right away, you

close the gate before it opens. The first seconds

are crucial. Extend them consciously. You don't

have to lie down for long. A few breaths are

enough. Instead of focusing on duties, focus on

the first feeling, the first image, or the first word.

It's your anchor. The second helpful step is to

repeat out loud or in your mind what you

remembered. It doesn't have to be a complete

sentence. All you need is: stairs, lock, glass,

conversation. The repetition consolidates. Then

you can reach for the notebook. Write down what

you remember. If you don't have the whole scene,

save the fragment. Often after a while, the next

elements are remembered. If you have time, you

can close your eyes again and ask: what was

before? Or: what happened next? Many dreams

come back this way. When the body knows it has

the memory space of sleep, it increasingly begins

to provide images from the depths of the night.

Working with micro-awakenings does not require

special techniques. It only requires attention and

goes through cycles. Micro-awakenings occur

naturally. What you can do is choose how you

react to them. Will you give them a moment of

silence and concentration, or will you cut them

right away? It's a choice that affects whether the

dream will stay with you for long. If you want to

increase efficiency, you can use a simple ritual

before bedtime. Put the notebook next to the bed.

Before you fall asleep, say one sentence to

yourself: I will remember the first thing I see.

Don't force anything. Just set the intention. The

brain will remember it. On the night, when a

micro-awakening occurs, there is a greater chance

that a fragment of the dream will also appear. If

you are sensitive to this moment, you will know

what to do with it. If you learn to stay with it even

for a moment, your dream memory will

strengthen within a few days. For many people, it

is micro-awakenings that change everything. You

don't have to analyze every night then. Just

capture one key piece. And then apply it. Micro-

awakenings are not a fallacy in a dream. They are

a function. Thanks to them, you can enter the

dream memory through the ajar door. And stay

The time you fall asleep is important for the

quality of sleep, and therefore also for the quality

of your dreams. The circadian rhythm is a natural

cycle of wakefulness and sleep that regulates the

work of the entire body. When it works

consistently, you fall asleep more easily, sleep

more deeply, and wake up with brighter memories

of dreams. The circadian rhythm is based on the

constant exchange of signals between light and

darkness. Natural light in the morning gives the

body an impulse to activity. Darkness in the

evening prepares the body for sleep. When you

sleep at different times, this rhythm loses its

regularity. Then the phases of sleep are less

predictable, and sleep can be shallower or

intermittent. This makes it difficult to remember

dreams and sometimes reduces their intensity. In

practice, this means that regular falling asleep and

getting up at similar times bring the greatest

✦ 17 ✦benefits. If you go to bed at the same time for

several days in a row, the body learns to recognize

this moment. Thanks to this, it passes into deep

sleep faster, and sleep cycles are stable. This, in

turn, increases the chance of longer REM stages in

the second half of the night, which is when vivid

dreams occur most often. Example: You fall asleep

at 10:30 p.m. for five days in a row and wake up

around 6:30. In this rhythm, the body itself

develops the constant NREM and REM phases.

When you wake up naturally, you more often find

a moment of micro-awakening after the REM

phase. It's the perfect time to catch sleep.

Compared to the situation when you go to bed

once at 22:00 and another time at 2:00 a.m., the

chance of remembering the dream increases

significantly. The circadian rhythm is sensitive to

light. Exposure to bright screens in the evening

can delay falling asleep and disregulate the

internal clock. If you use electronic devices just

before bedtime, your body may stay in standby

mode longer. Sleep comes later, and its quality

may be lower. A good solution is to limit the

bright light an hour before bedtime. Instead, you

can introduce a simple extinguishing ritual -

✦ 18 ✦dimmed light, a quieter voice, slower movements.

This not only promotes falling asleep, but also

prepares a field for dreams that will be deeper and

easier to remember. The second aspect is the

morning light. Exposing yourself to natural light

in the first hour after waking up helps to set the

circadian rhythm for the whole day. It gives the

body a signal: now is the time to act. Thanks to

this, the silence mode returns faster in the

evening. In the morning, you can just go out to the

balcony for a while, open the window, and look at

the daylight. Such a simple action synchronizes

the biological clock without any additional

techniques. If you have difficulty with regularity,

short transition rituals are helpful. In the evening,

it can be a specific moment of calm, in which you

put down the phone, take a few calm breaths, and

sit for a while in silence. It doesn't have to last

long. It is important that it is repeatable. In the

morning, it can be a morning sentence to write

down: what did I dream about today and what did

I remember from it? Thanks to this, the mind

recognizes the time of sleep as a separate stage of

the day. Naps are another element that affects the

circadian rhythm and the quality of dreams. A

✦ 19 ✦short nap, up to 20 minutes, can give freshness,

but usually does not contain full REM phases. A

longer nap, lasting 60-90 minutes, can contain a

full sleep cycle and lead to the REM phase. It is in

such a nap that dreams with a clear image that

you will remember can appear. If you want to use

your dreams during the day as well, plan one

longer nap during the hours when you are already

slightly tired, but it is not too late. For many

people, the best times are around 13:00–15:00.

Napping too late can move the time of night sleep

and break the natural rhythm. Example. You take

a nap at 14:00. You fall asleep for an hour. You

wake up and remember that in the dream you

were at the market, you were choosing fruit, and

someone gave you an apple with a visible spot. A

simple but concrete picture. An apple is

something that nourishes and strengthens. The

spot may suggest something that needs to be

cleaned or repaired. You may not have noticed it

in the morning. But after a nap — the dream

shows something that you can immediately check

in your daily schedule. This is an example of how

regularity and bedtime affect what you see. The

more consistent the circadian rhythm is, the more

✦ 20 ✦such images appear naturally. You don't have to

look for them by force. It is enough to give them

the right conditions. The round-clock rhythm can

also be supported by regular hours of eating. The

time of the last meal affects the rate of falling

asleep. A light dinner two to three hours before

bedtime allows the body to focus on rest, not

digestion. Thanks to this, sleep is deeper and

cycles are clearer. It's not about restrictions. It's

about the simple intention that sleep is an

important part of the day and it's worth giving it a

place. When the rhythm of day and night becomes

more predictable, the brain learns when to rest

and when to act. This directly translates into

dreams. When the body knows the time of sleep, it

enters its subsequent phases faster. When the

phases are full, the dreams become more

pronounced. When the dream ends close to the

moment of micro-awakening, you remember

more. All this is due to rhythm, not techniques.

The key is repeatability. You don't have to be

perfectly punctual. A deviation within an hour is

enough to maintain stability. If you fall asleep at

23:00 on one day and at 00:00 the next, the

rhythm can continue. But if you fall asleep at 9

✦ 21 ✦p.m. and another time at 3:00 a.m., the cycles

may overcome. Then, even with a longer sleep,

you may have the impression that "nothing was

dreamed". That doesn't mean there were no

dreams. It's just that the conditions were not

conducive to remembering them. For those who

work in shifts or live in an irregular rhythm of the

day, permanent landmarks are good support - for

example, a fixed nap time, a constant calming

ritual, a constant way of recording dreams. As a

result, even if the time of sleep changes, the body

and mind recognize these constant elements as a

signal: now is the time to rest and receive inner

images. If you want to support the memory of

dreams through the rhythm of the day, you can

start with two simple actions. First: set a bedtime

that you can keep for a few days. It doesn't have to

be perfect. It's supposed to be real. Second: enter

the morning moment of silence before you reach

for the phone. For a few breaths, remember what

you saw in your dream today. Write down the first

association. These two things are enough for the

circadian rhythm to support your dreams.

Rhythm does not require effort. It requires

consistency. The body likes repetition. Dreams
