Ladies thought he was more handsome than Mr. Bingley. Everyone admired him for a while. But then his behavior changed their minds. He seemed proud and unfriendly. He acted as if he was better than everyone. His wealth could not hide his bad manners. He seemed disagreeable and not as good as his friend.

Mr. Bingley quickly met many people. He was lively and open. He danced every dance. He even talked about hosting his own ball. He was very well-liked. Mr. Darcy was very different. He danced only twice. He did not want to meet other ladies. He walked around the room instead. People decided he was a proud man. They hoped he would not come back. Mrs. Bennet disliked him very much. She was angry because he ignored one of her daughters.

Elizabeth Bennet had to sit out two dances. There were not enough gentlemen to dance with. Mr. Darcy stood near her for some time. She heard him talking to Mr. Bingley. Mr. Bingley had left the dance for a moment. He wanted his friend to dance.

"Come, Darcy," Mr. Bingley said. "You must dance. I do not like to see you alone." "You should dance." Mr. Darcy replied, "I will not dance." "I hate dancing unless I know my partner well." "It would be too much trouble here." "Your sisters are dancing." "No other woman here is worth dancing with." "I would not be so picky," Mr. Bingley said. "I have never seen so many nice girls." "Many of them are very pretty." "You are dancing with the only pretty girl here," Mr. Darcy said. He looked at Jane Bennet. "Oh, she is very beautiful!" Mr. Bingley said. "But one of her sisters is sitting behind you." "She is also pretty and kind." "Let me ask my partner to introduce you." "Which one?" Mr. Darcy asked. He turned and looked at Elizabeth. He saw her looking at him. Then he looked away. He said coldly, "She is okay." "But she is not pretty enough for me." "I do not want to pay attention to ladies others ignore." "You should go back to your partner." "Enjoy her smiles. You are wasting time with me."

Mr. Bingley did what Mr. Darcy said. Mr. Darcy walked away. Elizabeth did not like him at all. She told her friends what happened. She told it with much humor. Elizabeth liked to laugh at silly things.

The whole Bennet family had a nice evening. Mrs. Bennet saw Jane was much admired. Mr. Bingley danced with Jane twice. His sisters also showed her special attention. Jane was very happy about this. Elizabeth was happy for Jane. Mary heard she was a talented girl. Kitty and Lydia always had partners. They were happy about that. The family went home to Longbourn. They were all in good spirits.

They found Mr. Bennet still awake. He was reading a book. He did not care about the time. He wanted to know about the ball. He had hoped his wife would be disappointed. But he heard a very different story.

"Oh, my dear Mr. Bennet," Mrs. Bennet said. "We had a wonderful evening. The ball was excellent." "I wish you had been there." "Jane was so admired. Everyone said she looked good." "Mr. Bingley thought she was beautiful." "He danced with her twice. Think of that!" "He asked her to dance a second time." "First, he danced with Miss Lucas." "I was upset to see that." "But he did not like her at all." "He seemed very taken with Jane." "He asked who she was and danced with her." "Then he danced with Miss King." "Then with Maria Lucas." "Then with Jane again, and then with Lizzy." "If he cared about me," Mr. Bennet said quickly. "He would not have danced so much!" "Please, do not talk about his partners anymore." "I wish he had hurt his ankle in the first dance!" "Oh, my dear," Mrs. Bennet continued. "I am very happy with him. He is so handsome!" "His sisters are lovely women." "Their dresses were the most elegant I have seen." "The lace on Mrs. Hurst's gown..." Mr. Bennet stopped her again. He did not want to hear about clothes. So, Mrs. Bennet changed the subject. She spoke angrily about Mr. Darcy's rudeness. "Lizzy does not lose much," she said. "He is a horrid man, not worth pleasing." "He is so proud and full of himself." "He walked around, thinking he was so great." "He was not handsome enough to dance with Lizzy!" "I wish you had been there to tell him off." "I truly hate that man."
