Everyone knows that a rich single man needs a wife. No one knows what such a man thinks when he first moves to a new place. But families nearby believe this idea strongly. They think he belongs to one of their daughters.
“My dear Mr. Bennet,” his wife said to him one day. “Have you heard that Netherfield Park is rented at last?”
Mr. Bennet said he had not heard.
“But it is,” she replied. “Mrs. Long was just here. She told me everything about it.”
Mr. Bennet did not answer.
“Do you not want to know who rented it?” his wife cried. She sounded impatient.
“You want to tell me,” he said. “I do not mind hearing it.”
This was all the invitation she needed.
“My dear, you must know,” she said. “Mrs. Long says a rich young man rented Netherfield. He is from the north of England. He came on Monday in a carriage to see the place. He liked it very much. He agreed with Mr. Morris right away. He will move in before Michaelmas. Some of his servants will be in the house by the end of next week.”
“What is his name?” Mr. Bennet asked.
“Bingley,” she answered.
“Is he married or single?” he asked.
“Oh, single, my dear, of course!” she exclaimed. “He is a rich single man. He has four or five thousand pounds a year. What a good thing for our girls!”
“How so?” he asked. “How can this affect them?”
“My dear Mr. Bennet,” his wife replied. “How can you be so annoying? You must know I am thinking of him marrying one of our daughters.”
“Is that why he is moving here?” he asked.
“Design? Nonsense!” she said. “How can you talk like that? But it is very likely he will fall in love with one of them. So you must visit him as soon as he arrives.”
“I see no reason for that,” he said. “You and the girls can go. Or you can send them by themselves. That might be even better. You are as pretty as any of them. Mr. Bingley might like you the most.”
“My dear, you flatter me,” she said. “I was certainly beautiful once. But I do not pretend to be special now. A woman with five grown-up daughters should stop thinking about her own beauty.”
“In such cases,” he said, “a woman often does not have much beauty to think about.”
“But, my dear,” she insisted. “You must go and see Mr. Bingley when he comes to the neighborhood.”
“That is more than I promise to do, I assure you,” he replied.
“But think about your daughters,” she said. “Imagine what a good marriage it would be for one of them. Sir William and Lady Lucas plan to go. They are going only for that reason. You know they usually do not visit new people. You must go. We cannot visit him if you do not.”
“You are too careful, surely,” he said. “I am sure Mr. Bingley will be happy to see you. I will send a short note with you. It will tell him I fully agree to him marrying any of the girls he chooses. But I must say a good word for my little Lizzy.”
“I want you to do no such thing,” she said. “Lizzy is not better than the others. I am sure she is not as pretty as Jane. She is not as kind as Lydia. But you always like her best.”
“None of them have much to offer,” he replied. “They are all silly and ignorant like other girls. But Lizzy is a little smarter than her sisters.”
“Mr. Bennet, how can you speak badly about your own children?” she asked. “You enjoy annoying me. You have no pity for my poor nerves.”
“You misunderstand me, my dear,” he said. “I respect your nerves very much. They are my old friends. I have heard you talk about them for at least twenty years.”
“Ah, you do not know what I suffer,” she said.
“But I hope you will get over it,” he said. “I hope you live to see many rich young men come to the neighborhood.”
“It will not help us,” she said. “Even if twenty such men come, you will not visit them.”
“Trust me, my dear,” he said. “When there are twenty, I will visit all of them.”
Mr. Bennet was a strange mix of cleverness, sharp humor, quietness, and sudden changes. His wife had known him for twenty-three years. But she still did not understand his personality. Her mind was easier to understand. She was a woman with poor judgment. She knew little and had a changeable mood. When she was unhappy, she thought she was nervous. Her main goal in life was to get her daughters married. Her comfort came from visiting people and hearing news.

Mr. Bennet was one of the first people to visit Mr. Bingley. He had always planned to visit him. But he kept telling his wife he would not go. His wife did not know about it until that evening. He told her then. He saw his second daughter, Lizzy, decorating a hat. He suddenly spoke to her. He said, “I hope Mr. Bingley will like it, Lizzy.”
“We cannot know what Mr. Bingley likes,” her mother said angrily. “This is because we are not visiting him.”
“But you forget, Mamma,” Elizabeth said. “We will meet him at the assemblies. Mrs. Long has promised to introduce him.”
“I do not believe Mrs. Long will do that. She has two nieces of her own. She is a selfish, insincere woman. I do not think well of her.”
“I don't either,” Mr. Bennet said. “I am glad you do not expect her to help you.”
Mrs. Bennet did not reply. But she could not stop herself. She began scolding one of her daughters.
“Don’t keep coughing so, Kitty, please stop! Think about my feelings. You are making me very nervous.”
“Kitty has no control over her coughs,” her father said. “She coughs at the wrong times.”
“I do not cough for my own fun,” Kitty replied, annoyed. “When is your next ball, Lizzy?”
“In two weeks.”
“Yes, that's right,” her mother cried. “Mrs. Long does not come back until the day before the ball. So, it will be impossible for her to introduce him. She will not know him herself.”
“Then, my dear, you can help your friend. You can introduce Mr. Bingley to her.”
“Impossible, Mr. Bennet, impossible! I do not know him myself. How can you be so annoying?”
“I respect your carefulness. Knowing someone for two weeks is certainly very little time. You cannot truly know a man in two weeks. But if we do not try, someone else will. Mrs. Long and her nieces must take their chances. She will think it is kind if you do not do it. So, I will do it myself.”
The girls looked at their father in surprise. Mrs. Bennet only said, “Nonsense, nonsense!”
“What do those strong words mean?” he cried. “Do you think the rules for introductions are nonsense? Do you think how important they are is nonsense? I do not agree with you there. What do you say, Mary? I know you are a young lady who thinks deeply. You read great books. You write down important parts.”
Mary wished to say something very wise. But she did not know how.
“While Mary is thinking,” he continued, “let us return to Mr. Bingley.”
“I am tired of Mr. Bingley,” his wife cried.
“I am sorry to hear that. But why did you not tell me so before? If I had known that this morning, I certainly would not have visited him. It is a shame. But I have already visited him. We cannot avoid knowing him now.”
The ladies were very surprised. This was just what he wanted. Mrs. Bennet's surprise was perhaps greater than the others. But when her first rush of happiness was over, she began to say that she had expected it all along.
“That was very kind of you, my dear Mr. Bennet! But I knew I would convince you in the end. I was sure you loved your girls too much. You would not ignore such a chance to meet someone. Well, how pleased I am! And it is such a good joke, too. You went this morning. You never said a word about it until now.”
“Now, Kitty, you may cough as much as you want,” Mr. Bennet said. As he spoke, he left the room. He was tired of his wife's excitement.
“What an excellent father you have, girls,” she said when the door was shut. “I do not know how you will ever thank him enough for his kindness. Or me either. At our age, it is not so pleasant, I can tell you. It is not pleasant to make new friends every day. But for your benefit, we would do anything. Lydia, my love, you are the youngest. But I am sure Mr. Bingley will dance with you at the next ball.”
“Oh,” Lydia said boldly, “I am not afraid. Even though I am the youngest, I am the tallest.”
The rest of the evening was spent guessing how soon he would visit Mr. Bennet back. They also decided when they should ask him to dinner.

Finally, they listened to their neighbor, Lady Lucas. She told them what she knew. Lady Lucas gave a very good report. Sir William liked Mr. Bingley very much. Mr. Bingley was young and very handsome. He was also very pleasant. Best of all, he planned to attend the next ball. He would bring many people with him. This was wonderful news. The family had high hopes for Mr. Bingley. They believed dancing often leads to love.
Mrs. Bennet spoke to her husband. She said, "If one of my daughters marries well at Netherfield. And if all the others also marry well. Then I will have everything I want."
A few days later, Mr. Bingley visited Mr. Bennet. He stayed for about ten minutes. They were in Mr. Bennet's library. Mr. Bingley hoped to meet the young ladies. He had heard they were very beautiful. But he only saw their father. The ladies were luckier. They watched from an upstairs window. They saw that he wore a blue coat. He rode a black horse.
Soon after, they sent a dinner invitation. Mrs. Bennet had already planned the meal. She wanted to show off her good cooking. But then an answer came. It postponed everything. Mr. Bingley had to be in town the next day. So he could not accept their invitation. Mrs. Bennet was very upset. She wondered why he had business in town so soon. He had just arrived in Hertfordshire. She began to worry. Maybe he would always travel around. He might never settle at Netherfield.
Lady Lucas calmed her a little. She suggested he went to London. He might be gathering a large group for the ball. Soon, a report spread. It said Mr. Bingley would bring twelve ladies. He would also bring seven gentlemen to the ball. The girls were sad about so many ladies. But they felt better the day before the ball. They heard he brought only six people from London. These were his five sisters and one cousin.
When the group entered the ballroom, there were only five people. These were Mr. Bingley, his two sisters, the eldest sister's husband, and another young man.
Mr. Bingley was handsome and polite. He had a pleasant face. His manners were natural and easy. His sisters were elegant women. They looked very fashionable. His brother-in-law, Mr. Hurst, just looked like a gentleman.
But his friend, Mr. Darcy, quickly caught everyone's eye. He was tall and handsome. He had a noble look. Also, everyone soon heard a rumor. He had ten thousand pounds a year. The gentlemen said he was a fine man. The ladies thought he was more handsome than Mr. Bingley. People admired him for about half the evening.
But then his behavior changed their minds. They found him proud. He acted better than everyone else. He seemed hard to please. Even his large estate in Derbyshire could not help him. He had a very unpleasant face. He was not as good as his friend.
Mr. Bingley quickly met all the important people. He was lively and open. He danced every dance. He was upset the ball ended early. He talked about hosting his own ball at Netherfield. These good qualities spoke for themselves. He was very different from his friend.
Mr. Darcy danced only twice. He danced once with Mrs. Hurst. He danced once with Miss Bingley. He refused to meet any other lady. He spent the evening walking around. He sometimes spoke to his own group. People quickly judged his character. He was the proudest and most unpleasant man. Everyone hoped he would never return.
Mrs. Bennet disliked him the most. His rude behavior made her angry. He had insulted one of her daughters.
Elizabeth Bennet had to sit out two dances. There were not enough gentlemen. During this time, Mr. Darcy stood nearby. She could hear him talking to Mr. Bingley. Mr. Bingley had left the dance for a moment. He wanted his friend to join in.
Mr. Bingley said, "Come, Darcy. You must dance. I hate to see you standing alone like this. You should really dance."
Mr. Darcy replied, "I will not dance. You know I hate it. I only dance if I know my partner well. A ball like this is unbearable. Your sisters are dancing with others. There is no other woman here. It would be a punishment to dance with them."
Mr. Bingley exclaimed, "I would not be so picky. I swear, I have never met so many nice girls. I have met them tonight. And many of them are very pretty."
Mr. Darcy looked at the eldest Miss Bennet. He said, "You are dancing with the only pretty girl here."
Mr. Bingley replied, "Oh, she is the most beautiful woman I have ever seen! But one of her sisters is sitting behind you. She is very pretty. I think she is also very pleasant. Let me ask my partner to introduce you."
Mr. Darcy asked, "Which one do you mean?" He turned around. He looked at Elizabeth for a moment. Their eyes met. He looked away. He said coldly, "She is okay. But she is not pretty enough for me. I do not want to pay attention to young ladies. Especially those ignored by other men. You should go back to your partner. Enjoy her smiles. You are wasting your time with me."
Mr. Bingley did as he was told. Mr. Darcy walked away. Elizabeth felt no warmth towards him. But she told the story to her friends with great humor. She had a lively and playful nature. She loved anything funny.

Everyone knows that a rich single man needs a wife. No one knows what such a man thinks when he first moves to a new place. But families nearby believe this idea strongly. They think he belongs to one of their daughters.
“My dear Mr. Bennet,” his wife said to him one day. “Have you heard that Netherfield Park is rented at last?”
Mr. Bennet said he had not heard.
“But it is,” she replied. “Mrs. Long was just here. She told me everything about it.”
Mr. Bennet did not answer.
“Do you not want to know who rented it?” his wife cried. She sounded impatient.
“You want to tell me,” he said. “I do not mind hearing it.”
This was all the invitation she needed.
“My dear, you must know,” she said. “Mrs. Long says a rich young man rented Netherfield. He is from the north of England. He came on Monday in a carriage to see the place. He liked it very much. He agreed with Mr. Morris right away. He will move in before Michaelmas. Some of his servants will be in the house by the end of next week.”
“What is his name?” Mr. Bennet asked.
“Bingley,” she answered.
“Is he married or single?” he asked.
“Oh, single, my dear, of course!” she exclaimed. “He is a rich single man. He has four or five thousand pounds a year. What a good thing for our girls!”
“How so?” he asked. “How can this affect them?”
“My dear Mr. Bennet,” his wife replied. “How can you be so annoying? You must know I am thinking of him marrying one of our daughters.”
“Is that why he is moving here?” he asked.
“Design? Nonsense!” she said. “How can you talk like that? But it is very likely he will fall in love with one of them. So you must visit him as soon as he arrives.”
“I see no reason for that,” he said. “You and the girls can go. Or you can send them by themselves. That might be even better. You are as pretty as any of them. Mr. Bingley might like you the most.”
“My dear, you flatter me,” she said. “I was certainly beautiful once. But I do not pretend to be special now. A woman with five grown-up daughters should stop thinking about her own beauty.”
“In such cases,” he said, “a woman often does not have much beauty to think about.”
“But, my dear,” she insisted. “You must go and see Mr. Bingley when he comes to the neighborhood.”
“That is more than I promise to do, I assure you,” he replied.
“But think about your daughters,” she said. “Imagine what a good marriage it would be for one of them. Sir William and Lady Lucas plan to go. They are going only for that reason. You know they usually do not visit new people. You must go. We cannot visit him if you do not.”
“You are too careful, surely,” he said. “I am sure Mr. Bingley will be happy to see you. I will send a short note with you. It will tell him I fully agree to him marrying any of the girls he chooses. But I must say a good word for my little Lizzy.”
“I want you to do no such thing,” she said. “Lizzy is not better than the others. I am sure she is not as pretty as Jane. She is not as kind as Lydia. But you always like her best.”
“None of them have much to offer,” he replied. “They are all silly and ignorant like other girls. But Lizzy is a little smarter than her sisters.”
“Mr. Bennet, how can you speak badly about your own children?” she asked. “You enjoy annoying me. You have no pity for my poor nerves.”
“You misunderstand me, my dear,” he said. “I respect your nerves very much. They are my old friends. I have heard you talk about them for at least twenty years.”
“Ah, you do not know what I suffer,” she said.
“But I hope you will get over it,” he said. “I hope you live to see many rich young men come to the neighborhood.”
“It will not help us,” she said. “Even if twenty such men come, you will not visit them.”
“Trust me, my dear,” he said. “When there are twenty, I will visit all of them.”
Mr. Bennet was a strange mix of cleverness, sharp humor, quietness, and sudden changes. His wife had known him for twenty-three years. But she still did not understand his personality. Her mind was easier to understand. She was a woman with poor judgment. She knew little and had a changeable mood. When she was unhappy, she thought she was nervous. Her main goal in life was to get her daughters married. Her comfort came from visiting people and hearing news.

“But you forget, Mamma,” Elizabeth said. “We will meet him at the assemblies. Mrs. Long has promised to introduce him.”
“I do not believe Mrs. Long will do that. She has two nieces of her own. She is a selfish, insincere woman. I do not think well of her.”
“I don't either,” Mr. Bennet said. “I am glad you do not expect her to help you.”
Mrs. Bennet did not reply. But she could not stop herself. She began scolding one of her daughters.

“Kitty has no control over her coughs,” her father said. “She coughs at the wrong times.”

“In two weeks.”
“Yes, that's right,” her mother cried. “Mrs. Long does not come back until the day before the ball. So, it will be impossible for her to introduce him. She will not know him herself.”

The ladies were very surprised. This was just what he wanted. Mrs. Bennet's surprise was perhaps greater than the others. But when her first rush of happiness was over, she began to say that she had expected it all along.
“That was very kind of you, my dear Mr. Bennet! But I knew I would convince you in the end. I was sure you loved your girls too much. You would not ignore such a chance to meet someone. Well, how pleased I am! And it is such a good joke, too. You went this morning. You never said a word about it until now.”
“Now, Kitty, you may cough as much as you want,” Mr. Bennet said. As he spoke, he left the room. He was tired of his wife's excitement.
“What an excellent father you have, girls,” she said when the door was shut. “I do not know how you will ever thank him enough for his kindness. Or me either.
