Morocco’s King Mohammed VI will visit Washington on a state visit on March 15 at the invitation of the US President. The two leaders will discuss ways of strengthening bilateral relations and expanding cooperation between the United States and Morocco. It will be the first meeting between the two leaders.

On his arrival in Washington the King will review a military guard of honour. In his talks with the President he is expected to touch on the situation in the Middle East and particularly Morocco’s role in the peace process in this region. A US spokesman has pointed out that they will discuss all major issues of international concern. Radio Rabat reports that the role of Islamic countries in world affairs is likely to be another chief topic.

The King, accompanied by his wife and his foreign minister, will visit New York in order to attend a session at the United Nations before flying back to Rabat.

The Polish President is scheduled to visit Germany this week on his first official foreign trip since his election in November. The itinerary includes a Berlin meeting with Germany’s President Joachim Gauck. The talk are expected to focus on expanding economic cooperation between Poland and Germany and on other issues of bilateral concern. Later this month the President will hold talks with the NATO leadership during a two-day visit to Brussels, and is likely to pay an official visit to the United States next year. He has also received an invitation to Moscow from the Russian President but no date has been set for the visit so far.

Rome. The President of Hungary, Mr Arpad Göncz, who was elected head of state in 1990, arrived here on four-day visit to Italy and the Vatican. At the start of his visit, President Göncz met the Italian President and is scheduled to hold talks with the prime minister later in the day. He is due to meet Italian business leaders on the second day of his stay in Italy.

After the meeting with prime minister Dini the two leaders made no public statement. A press release issued by the premier’s office said they had agreed to strengthen the already close ties between their countries and touched on some important international events. Sources quoted by the press said that Göncz and Dini had discussed security issues as well as Hungary’s request to enter the EU. Hungary along with some other Eastern and Central European countries would like to join the European Union and NATO as soon as possible. According to an Italian news agency Hungary is one of the countries with the biggest chance of joining these organizations but the process of integration will take time.

The Hungarian President, Mr Arpad Göncz, is due to meet Pope John Paul, who visited Hungary in 1996, at the Vatican on Thursday.

Seoul, March 1996. Mr John Major, the British prime minister, is paying an official visit to South Korea and there are great expectations for the expansion of mutual relations. The press gives a wide coverage of the visit stressing that the summit talks between Great Britain and Korea mark the beginning of a new era of strengthening economic, political and cultural relations between the two nations.

According to the press the British premier has improved the image of Britain in the eyes of the Koreans. First, he pledged cooperation with regard to technology transfer to Korea. Some hi-tech joint projects are the key point of the negotiations between the Korean government and British manufacturers. Then, he issued a warning to North Korea that it must comply with the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and accept site inspections by the International Atomic Energy Agency, and further promised to support a nuclear-free Korean peninsula. Finally, at a banquet given in his honour, the prime minister personally handed over to president Kim an ancient Korean manuscript that had been kept at the library of the British Museum since 1867.

Premier John Major is the first British prime minister to pay a visit to South Korea since 1986. He is scheduled to leave for London on Saturday.

We are honoured to receive the visit by the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. It is a landmark development in our bilateral relations. They will go on expanding, growing from strength to strength and benefiting both peoples, adding to their prosperity and friendship.
