FRAGMENT KSIĄŻKI
I was born in 1984, and from my earliest years, I loved spending time outdoors, discovering new places, and exploring the world around me. Later, from 1997 onwards, internet cafes became my favorite places where I could dive into the infinity of virtual reality. In the evenings, together with my mom, we would immerse ourselves in the world of science fiction movies, and I particularly loved "Terminator" and the director's visions regarding the future, artificial intelligence, and robots. My youthful imagination led me through various dreams and visions of what my future might look like...
When it came time to choose a path in adult life, I always strived to achieve something exceptional. I thought that a career in the military or a corporation would give me what I desired in life. I got caught in a certain whirl, much like the hero of our story, which you will read about shortly.
Choosing a career in a corporation as a banker seemed obvious. I knew this was a place where I would achieve success and social status, both of which were always important to me. Initially, working in the corporation was exciting and full of challenges. I knew this was what I had been striving for all along. However, over time, the routine and pressure of everyday life began to overwhelm me.
The corporate world, with its rules and expectations, did not allow me to pursue my true passions and dreams. I felt that the passing years would leave behind nothing more than filled bank accounts and an empty heart. What once seemed to me the key to success now began to resemble an illusion. Tired of the constant chase for a career and material achievements, I started noticing the effects of consumerism and the pervading societal system. Spending most of my time in the corporation, I realized I was losing touch with what truly mattered in life.
In the corporate world, success is often measured only by the amount of money in the bank, professional position, and social prestige. Although all of this seemed fulfilling on the surface, deep in my heart I felt that there was more than just constant competition and the desire to own more and more material goods.
Some time ago, exhausted by this whole chase of the modern world, I managed to abandon this race, also thanks to my wife. Over time, I noticed the traps I was falling into. I discovered that my heart still beats with the thrill of exploring uncharted territories and immersing myself in the richness of diverse cultures. I realized that I needed to find a balance between my personal desires and the expectations of society. Despite this revelation, life continued at an unrelenting pace, much like the protagonist of the story you're about to delve into.
This narrative may seem banal or biased to you, but as you read on, I urge you to pause and reflect on its parallels with your life or the lives of those around you. In our existence, often a whirlwind chase for elusive goals, moments of introspection or opportunities for transformation unexpectedly arise. Some people, when confronted with these moments, find within themselves the courage to pause, reconsider their paths, and catalyze change, thereby tasting the true essence of freedom and happiness in our all-too-brief lives.
Embrace this story, and afford yourself the luxury of contemplation during your free moments. Reflect on whether similar or entirely different circumstances in your life have allowed for subtle or radical shifts from a frenzied pursuit within the system to a calmer, more fulfilling existence.
In the final chapters of this book, I have dedicated extensive discussions on the intricacies of the 'Matrix' - the societal construct - within which each of us resides. These are but a few examples, as the 'Matrix' can represent different realities for different individuals.
So, unlike Morpheus in the popular movie who offered Neo a choice between a red and a blue pill, I'm not here to give you a binary choice. Rather, I invite you on a journey of profound self-reflection.
This introspective expedition has the potential to liberate you from the confines of societal expectations and guide you towards a life of genuine freedom.1.
The Zone of Comfort
Good morning, Thomas," said the monotone voice of his virtual assistant, breaking him from his thoughts. "You have a busy day ahead."
"Indeed," Thomas replied sarcastically as he began preparing for the long day ahead. Every moment of his routine was etched into his memory, like a well-worn groove on an old vinyl record. He showered, dressed, and ate breakfast with mechanical precision, all the while feeling a nagging sensation in the pit of his stomach – the gnawing realization that he was trapped in an unfulfilling existence.
"Is this really all there is?" - He muttered to himself, staring at his reflection in the bathroom mirror.
His days were spent navigating a sea of angry customers and adhering to strict protocols, longing for the thrill of challenge and adventure he had once known. The evenings were no better. Thomas would return home from work, collapse onto his couch, and numb his growing discontent with hours of mindless television. But lately, these distractions seemed less and less effective at suppressing the disquiet brewing within him.
"Maybe it's time for a change," - Thomas mused aloud, as he grabbed his coat and headed out the door.
The crisp morning air brushed against his face as he walked toward the bus stop, the familiar path he had tread countless times before.
A feeling of both urgency and uncertainty bubbled within him as he contemplated breaking free from the confines of his comfort zone. He knew that somewhere beyond this life of routine and predictability lay a world rife with challenges, excitement, and fulfillment – but how could he find it? And more importantly, did he have the courage to pursue it?
"Excuse me," said an elderly woman, interrupting - Thomas’s reverie. "Do you know when the next bus is due?” - Thomas glanced at the schedule posted nearby. "In about five minutes, ma'am."
"Thank you, dear," she replied with a smile, her eyes creased with warmth and wisdom.
As the two stood waiting, Thomas's thoughts continued to churn, grappling with the implications of abandoning the safety of his well-paying job and the security of his daily routine. But when he looked back on his life, would he be content with a story defined by complacency and inaction? Or would he seize this opportunity to write a new chapter, one filled with growth, adventure, and discovery?
"Have a great day," Thomas said to the old lady as they boarded the bus. "Thank you, young man. You too."
As the bus pulled away, Thomas felt an unfamiliar sensation – a flicker of excitement for the unknown possibilities that lay ahead. For the first time in a long while, he began to hope that there was indeed more to life than what he had known so far, and he was determined to seek it out. With each passing moment, the chains of his comfort zone grew weaker, and soon, they would break entirely.
Thomas's crisp white shirt and meticulously knotted tie stood out against the sterile backdrop of his cubicle at the bank. The weight of the headset pressed firmly against his head, a constant reminder of his newfound role as a customer service representative.
He glanced at the clock, which seemed to be locked in place; it taunted him with its unyielding hands, counting down the seconds until his lunch break.
As he patiently waited, Thomas attempted to maintain his composure during another tedious call.
"Sir, I understand your frustration," - Thomas said calmly, leaning back in his chair while the irate customer on the other end of the line vented about a late fee. "I assure you that we will do our best to resolve this issue."
With practiced precision, Thomas navigated through the computer system, following the strict protocols outlined by the bank. Despite the mounting agitation in the caller's voice, he managed to suppress the desire to stray from the script. Instead, he offered a series of textbook responses, each one more impersonal than the last.
"Thank you for your patience," he concluded, finally managing to placate the disgruntled client. "We appreciate your business, and I hope you have a great day."
As soon as the call ended, Thomas sighed heavily, feeling the weight of the conversation settle upon his shoulders. His thoughts wandered to the exhilarating days of his time in the army and the high-stakes corporate deals he once brokered. Now, confined to the monotonous drone of angry customers and rigid guidelines, he could feel his spirit stifling under the burden of compliance.
Thomas took a moment to observe his colleagues, most of whom were engaged in similarly wearisome conversations. Their clothing was as uniform as their demeanor: conservative suits in somber shades of black, gray, and navy. In an environment where deviation was frowned upon, Thomas found himself adhering to these societal norms without question.
During lunch, Thomas joined his coworkers in the break room, the conversation flowing like a well-rehearsed script. Talk of weekend plans and the latest TV shows filled the air, but any subject that could spark controversy or incite debate was carefully avoided. Each person seemed content with their neatly packaged lives, never daring to venture beyond the boundaries of convention.
"Did you catch the game last night?" asked one of his colleagues, glancing over at Thomas.
"Unfortunately not," he replied, forcing a smile. "I had to work late.” "Too bad, it was a great match," the colleague responded before shifting his attention elsewhere.
Internally, Thomas felt the restlessness gnawing at him – the yearning to break free from this cage that he had willingly entered. He envisioned a life unbound by rigid routines and stifling conformity, a life where he could explore the depths of his passions and curiosities. With each passing day, the resolve to escape his comfort zone grew stronger, fueled by an insatiable desire for more than what lay before him.
As he returned to his desk after lunch, Thomas made a silent promise to himself: no longer would he be shackled by the expectations of others. The time had come to challenge the status quo, to embrace the unknown, and to reclaim the adventurous spirit that once defined him. And so, with renewed determination, Thomas began to plot his escape from the confines of his mundane existence, inching ever closer to the freedom that beckoned just beyond the horizon.
As Thomas entered his pristine apartment, the hum of the air conditioner and the faint scent of lemon-scented cleaning solution greeted him. A large flat-screen TV dominated one wall of his living room, while an expensive leather couch sat opposite it. The keys to his shiny new car rested on a glass table nearby, reflecting the soft glow of the evening sun.
"Another day done," he sighed, loosening his tie and hanging it on the coat rack by the door.
"Welcome home, Thomas," a voice chimed from the corner of the room. It was his virtual assistant, programmed to provide him with everything from news updates to dinner suggestions. "Would you like me to order takeout for you tonight?"
"Sure," he replied, sinking into the couch. "The usual."
"Ordering now," confirmed the assistant. "Your food will arrive in approximately thirty minutes."
As Thomas reclined, a feeling of unease settled over him. His life had become a well-oiled machine, each day running smoothly and predictably like clockwork. The steady income from his job allowed him to indulge in material comforts – the latest gadgets, designer clothes, and luxurious vacations. Yet, even amidst this abundance, a nagging sense of dissatisfaction gnawed at him, growing stronger with each passing day.
"Is this all there is?" he wondered, staring blankly at the rows of perfectly aligned books on his shelf – most of which remained unread. "Is this what I've been working so hard for?"
He thought back to his days in the army, the camaraderie and adrenaline that had once fueled him. He remembered the thrill of facing the unknown, the challenge of pushing himself beyond his limits. Those experiences had made him feel alive, giving him a sense of purpose that now seemed sorely lacking.
"Time waits for no one," he muttered, glancing at the clock on the wall. It seemed as though the seconds were slipping through his fingers like grains of sand, each moment irretrievable once it had passed.
"Are you feeling unwell, Thomas?”- asked the virtual assistant, sensing the change in his tone. "I can search for some relaxation techniques if you would like."
"No, I'm fine," - he replied, waving away the offer. But deep down, he knew that something needed to change. He couldn't continue to drift through life, settling for a hollow existence devoid of passion and fulfillment. The time had come for him to confront his fears, to face the uncertainty that lay beyond the confines of his comfort zone.
"Tomorrow,"- he decided, steeling himself for the challenges ahead. "Tomorrow, I start taking back control of my life."
The sun was setting as Thomas sat at a cafe, his eyes scanning the pages of a well-worn travel guide. The book was filled with images of exotic locales and daring adventures, each one offering an escape from the monotony that had become his life.
As he sipped his coffee, he found himself imagining what it would be like to trek through dense jungles, scale towering peaks, or sail across uncharted seas. "Hey Thomas," - came a cheerful voice, snapping him out of his reverie. He looked up to see Erik, an old army buddy, pulling up a chair beside him. "What's got you so engrossed?"
"Ah, just some light reading," - Thomas replied, trying to sound nonchalant. But Erik could sense the dissatisfaction lurking beneath the surface.
"Looks like you've got a case of wanderlust," he observed, flipping through the pages of the travel guide. "You know, there's more to life than working a nine-to-five and collecting material possessions."
Thomas hesitated for a moment, his gaze drifting towards the horizon.
"I know," - he admitted, his voice barely audible above the din of the cafe. "But I'm... scared, Erik. Scared of leaving my comfort zone, of taking risks, of failing."
