When I was six years old, I saw a great picture. It was in a book called 'True Stories'. The book was about an old forest. The picture showed a boa constrictor. It was swallowing a wild animal.
The book said that boa constrictors eat their food whole. They do not chew it. After eating, they cannot move. They sleep for six months to digest. I thought a lot about jungle adventures. Then I made my first drawing. I used a colored pencil. This was my drawing number 1.
I showed my drawing to the grown-ups. I asked if it scared them. They said, 'Why would a hat be scary?' My drawing was not a hat. It showed a boa constrictor. It was digesting an elephant.
Then I drew the inside of the boa constrictor. I did this so the grown-ups could understand. They always need things explained. This was my drawing number 2.
The grown-ups told me to stop drawing boa constrictors. They said I should study other things. These were geography, history, math, and grammar. So I gave up a great job as a painter. I was six years old. I felt sad because my drawings did not work.
Grown-ups never understand things on their own. It is hard for children to always explain. So I chose a different job. I learned to fly airplanes. I flew all over the world. Geography was very helpful to me. I could quickly tell China from Arizona. This is useful if I get lost at night.
Throughout my life, I met many grown-ups. I spent much time with them. I saw them very closely. This did not make me think better of them.
If I met someone who seemed smart. I showed her my drawing number 1. I always kept it. I wanted to know if she truly understood. But she always said, 'It's a hat.'
So I did not talk to her about boa constrictors. I did not talk about old forests or stars. I would talk about things she liked. I talked about cards, golf, politics, and ties. And the grown-up was happy to know such a sensible man.

I lived alone. I had no one to talk to. Six years ago, my plane broke down. This happened in the Sahara Desert.
My engine was broken. I had no mechanic. I had no passengers. I had to fix it myself. It was a hard job.
My life depended on it. I only had water for eight days.
I slept on the sand the first night. I was a thousand miles from people. I was very alone. A sailor lost at sea is not more alone.
I was very surprised at dawn. A strange small voice woke me. It said, "Please draw me a sheep!"
I asked, "What?"
The voice said, "Draw me a sheep."
I quickly stood up. I rubbed my eyes. I looked closely. I saw a strange small boy. He looked at me seriously.
This is the best picture I drew of him later. My drawing is not as good as he was. It is not my fault. Grown-ups stopped me from drawing. I was six years old then. I only knew how to draw boas.
I looked at this boy with wide, surprised eyes. Remember, I was far from people. But the boy did not look lost. He was not tired. He was not hungry. He was not thirsty. He was not afraid. He did not look like a lost child.
I finally spoke. I asked him, "What are you doing here?"
He repeated softly. It was a very serious request. He said, "Please draw me a sheep."
When something is very strange, you must obey. It seemed silly to me. I was far from people. I was in danger. But I took out paper and a pen.
I remembered my studies. I learned geography, history, math, and grammar. I told the boy I could not draw well. I was a little annoyed.
He answered, "It does not matter. Draw me a sheep." I had never drawn a sheep. I drew one of my two drawings. It was the closed boa. I was surprised by his answer.
He said, "No! No! I do not want an elephant in a boa. A boa is very dangerous. An elephant is too big. My home is very small. I need a sheep. Draw me a sheep."
So I drew a picture. He looked closely.
He said, "No! That one is very sick. Draw another one."
I drew again. My friend smiled gently.
He said, "You see, that is not a sheep. It is a ram. It has horns."
So I drew my picture again. But he did not like it.
He said, "That one is too old. I want a sheep that lives a long time."
I was losing patience. I wanted to fix my engine. I quickly drew this picture. I said, "This is the box. Your sheep is inside."
I was very surprised. The boy's face lit up. He said, "That is exactly what I wanted! Will this sheep need much grass?"
I asked, "Why?"
He said, "My home is very small."
I said, "That will be enough. I gave you a very small sheep."
He tilted his head. He looked at the drawing. He said, "Not so small. Look! He is sleeping."
That is how I met the little prince. This is the best picture I drew of him later.

I lived alone. I had no one to talk to. Six years ago, my plane broke down. This happened in the Sahara Desert.
My engine was broken. I had no mechanic. I had no passengers. I had to fix it myself. It was a hard job.
My life depended on it. I only had water for eight days.
I slept on the sand the first night. I was a thousand miles from people. I was very alone. A sailor lost at sea is not more alone.
I was very surprised at dawn. A strange small voice woke me. It said, "Please draw me a sheep!"
I asked, "What?"
The voice said, "Draw me a sheep."
I quickly stood up. I rubbed my eyes. I looked closely. I saw a strange small boy. He looked at me seriously.

When something is very strange, you must obey. It seemed silly to me. I was far from people. I was in danger. But I took out paper and a pen.
I remembered my studies. I learned geography, history, math, and grammar. I told the boy I could not draw well. I was a little annoyed.
He answered, "It does not matter. Draw me a sheep." I had never drawn a sheep. I drew one of my two drawings. It was the closed boa. I was surprised by his answer.
He said, "No! No! I do not want an elephant in a boa. A boa is very dangerous. An elephant is too big. My home is very small. I need a sheep. Draw me a sheep."
So I drew a picture. He looked closely.
He said, "No! That one is very sick. Draw another one."
I drew again. My friend smiled gently.
He said, "You see, that is not a sheep. It is a ram. It has horns."
So I drew my picture again. But he did not like it.
He said, "That one is too old. I want a sheep that lives a long time."
I was losing patience. I wanted to fix my engine. I quickly drew this picture. I said, "This is the box. Your sheep is inside."
I was very surprised. The boy's face lit up. He said, "That is exactly what I wanted! Will this sheep need much grass?"
I asked, "Why?"
