FRAGMENT KSIĄŻKI
THERE’S A LITTLE RIVER PASSING.
BY THE RIVER, THERE’S THE HOME,
OF OUR DEAR MARCELEK,
WHO’S THE BRAVEST LITTLE BOY.
HE WANDERS BOLDLY THROUGH NARROW STREETS,
AND BRAVE HE REALLY IS,
AS KNIGHTS ARE THE BIGGEST INTEREST OF HIS.
CIESZYN HAS MANY SECRETS TO TELL
OF ALL THE OLD HOUSES AND TENEMENTS THERE.
IT HAS ROADWAYS, PATHS AND TRACKS,
WHERE MARCELEK DOES HIS HIKES.
ALL OF THE TOWN HE DID ONCE EXPLORE,
AS HISTORY IS WHAT HE DOES SO ADORE.
LISTEN WHO HE MET, LET’S READ AND HAVE FUN
AS I WILL TELL YOU MORE TALES THAN ONEOn an early winter morning in Cieszyn
Winter wears very cold fashion.
– Marcelek! It’s time to get up.
Winter is here, no doubt about that.
Throw off the blanket, put on your slippers.
We’ll fill our tummies with tasty breakfast.
Mom smiled, standing by the bed,
while he went to the window and touched his head.
– Everything’s silver! Snow’s everywhere!
I’ll have an icicle by my ear!
– Don’t worry, little one – said mom,
as the chocolate cake she cut.
– You’ll have no icicle if you wear a hat. That loud did Marcel shout by the tower,
that a small hedgehog appeared, startled.
– Why are you making so much noise, in the middle of the
snow?
My ears are swelling, and my hair is standing on.
The boy said hi politely, apologized, and decided to ask him:
– Dear little hedgehog, how should I call you?
– My name’s Mikołaj. Tell me your name too, will you?
– I am Marcelek, nice to meet the spikiness of yours.
Where’s your home?
Down where the stream flows!
Next to pear and apple trees there is a heap of my leaves.
Pointed downward with his paw, then he asked:
– Are you alone? Do you like this town? I know Cieszyn! And
learning its street names is my passion.
If you want, I’ll show you around.
And I’ll tell you what is worth checking out!Marcelek replied as politely as he would:
– Ah, Mikołaj, thank you!
Speaking of your name, I think I know you.
You bring gifts to children in summer, don’t you?
– Oh, Marcel, what are you saying?
St. Nicholas Day is not in the summer!
December is the date.
And Nela surely can’t wait!
– Who is Nela?
– My best friend and a squirrel!
She has a red and furry tail.
And collects acorns right where I dwell.
You can always rely on her,
only you have to follow her terms.– What kind of terms? And what measures…
– Do not take away her treasures!
This does lead to her displeasure.
Although squirrels have it so,
they collect acorns in no time at all.
All of a sudden, Nela jumped up, as she saw that little lad.
– Hi Mikołaj, hey you,
you didn’t mention you met someone new.
To play with Marcelek you went, leaving out your red friend?
She moved her whiskers and lifted her nose too,
Then jumped off the branch, just as squirrels do.
– Oh, Nela, don’t be mad.
My memory is just like that.
Let’s be friends, all of us,
it’s not the time to cross swords.– Bye, bye, Marcelek! – they waved and called after him,
and stayed to play with snowballs until the sky turned dim.
Nela said goodbye as the evening did fall
And hid in the hollow, though the hollow was small.
The hedgehog went back under his pile of leaves and moss deep,
burrowed himself and yawned, getting ready for his winter sleep.
Before you fall asleep on your feather cushions,
Listen to some fun facts about squirrels, hedgehogs, and Cieszyn.Fun facts about hedgehogs
Hedgehogs are small mammals that measure no more than 30 centimeters. They are active mainly at night at which time they search for food. They feed on snails and small rodents. They are very useful creatures, as they eliminate pests from our gardens.
Their life span is about 10 years. That’s quite a lot for such a small animal.
Hedgehogs have nearly 5,000 spines on their bodies! Isn’t that a lot?
These little needles are used for defense. Whenever they feel threatened, they curl up in a ball, and the quills protect them from predators.
Contrary to what many people say, hedgehogs do not carry apples on their quills. They like to live in eco-friendly gardens, as non-organic fertilizers are harmful to them. Despite being such cute animals, they cannot live in our homes. They are under protection in Poland and live in the wild. Besides, they tend to stomp their little legs, growl and puff loudly. No one would sleep next to them!
However, we can take care of their homes before winter, or provide them with a pile of leaves in our gardens. Hedgehogs like to make their beds in such places, where they fall, just like Mikołaj, into winter sleep.Fun facts about squirrels
Squirrels, unlike hedgehogs, do not fall into winter sleep. For this reason, you can observe them almost every day during your walks in the park or in the woods. In winter, however, they prefer to stay warm in their hollows, because, just like us, they are not fond of too much cold.
Did you know that squirrels can also build bird-like nests? They can even build such a nest on a balcony! Fortunately, they have so much space in parks that they rarely visit balconies. Can you imagine how many nuts they could store by your house?
Squirrels live from 3 to 4 years. They also have 20 to 22 teeth that continuously grow throughout their lives! These teeth are hard and strong and can be used to crack nuts.
Squirrels have a very good memory – they always know where they have hidden their food for the winter. Their excellent sense of smell and eyesight helps them in that too. They hide food in various places throughout the park and can always find it!
Did you know that squirrels gather mushrooms? They dry them on trees and then eat them as a snack. Let’s hope they leave some mushrooms for us too.
Do you have your favorite snack too?Fun facts about Cieszyn
Cieszyn is a beautiful city in southern Poland. It is located near the border with our neighbor – the Czech Republic.
It is a great place for family trips, as it is famous for its many interesting sights. Together with your parents, you can visit the town hall, the museum, the theater, the statue of St. Florian and, like Marcelek, the Piast Tower.
The tower is very tall. It measures more than 24 meters high and you can climb it by using steps. The view from up there is incredible! It’s so high that you can see all of Cieszyn from the top of it! And, once a year if you have a special permit, you can stay there overnight.
During your trip, you can go with your parents to see the Romanesque Rotunda located on the Castle Mount. This is the oldest and most important monument of the Cieszyn region. It can be found on the current 20 zloty Polish banknote.
Perhaps you’ll meet Marcelek during your visit to the city?
He’ll surely tell you all the interesting facts!
